Dustin Johnson Solidifies Top Spot; Spieth Back to No. 2

The top two golfers at Sunday’s Northern Trust Open are now the top two golfers in the world.

Winner Dustin Johnson tightened his grip on the No. 1 ranking in the latest Official World Golf Rankings while Jordan Spieth returned to No. 2 in the world with his second-place finish, dislodging Hideki Matsuyama from the spot.

Johnson held the top spot for a 28th straight week. If he can hold it for another month, he will tie Vijay Singh for 10th for the most weeks spent at No. 1 (32).  Jon Rahm (5th) and Justin Thomas (6th) both climbed to career highs in the rankings this week. Thomas gives the US three men in the top six, four in the top 10 (Rickie Fowler is 10th), and six in the top 13.

American Julian Suri, who won the Made  in Denmark last Sunday, jumped from 213th to 109th in the rankings. He was ranked 1,137 th at the end of 2016.

Race to Dubai Rankings

Tommy Fleetwood continues to lead with 3.771 million points in 17 tournaments. Sergio Garcia is second at 2.799 million, followed by Jon Rahm and Rafa Cabrera Bello.

Suri is now ranked 60th – the cutoff point – following his win in Denmark.

American Suri Wins Made in Denmark Crown

A 64 made its mark for the fourth straight day at the Made in Denmark Tournament, with American Julian Suri winning on the European Tour for the first time in his career. Suri shot a 64 to finish 19-under and win the tournament by four strokes. It’s just his seventh career start on the European Tour.

The finish was a lot closer than it looked. Playing along David Horsey, Suri had a one-stroke lead going to No. 18, but Horsey floundered and ended his weekend with a triple bogey.

Suri turned in a flawless card on Sunday, hitting seven birdies.

“It was a blast out there. Especially in that atmosphere with the fans. It was really cool,” he said.

“Everybody is so enthusiastic out there, with such genuine appreciation for the game and spectacle. I just wanted to soak it up as much as I could.”

The win puts Suri at #60 in the Race to Dubai standings – the cutoff point for the tournament which starts in about a month. Finishing second moved Horsey into the Top 60 as well at No. 56.

Dating for cyclists in London – what to look for?

We’ve looked at popular London cycing clubs and we’ve shared our guide to finding a cycling buddy. But what if you are looking for love? We take a look at a speed dating event designed for cyclists.

Look Mum No Hands! recently teamed up with Cycle Speed Dating to hold a ‘Date & Ride’ event. Single cyclists mounted their bikes and rode around landmarks of London while changing partner every few minutes. The group ended the day by getting a cold beer at the bar after the ride, and getting to know each other better. Sounds straight forward and kinda fun, right? And even if you don’t bag a date at the end of it all, at least you get to take a leisurely ride around London and meet nice people en route.

dating in london

These collaborative events have taken place since 2013 for different ages and orientations. ‘We want to offer a relaxed way to meet new people, offline (for people who are sick of swiping) – and want to contribute to a positive cycling culture in London,’ says Margriet Schuring from CSD. ‘We know about quite a few “success stories”. Having the love for bicycles/cycling in common is a great start for a date and speaking from my own experience, it just doesn’t work when your partner wants to take the bus and you just want to ride your bike everywhere!’

So we know where to meet fellow cyclists looking for love, but what is it that we need to consider when finding a new partner?

Love for Lycra

Not everyone shares your passion for Lycra. They might even think it’s a bit…well, weird. You need to find someone who doesn’t mind tripping over mountains of smelly Lycra shorts waiting to be washed in the hallway. Or, you’ll need to get your act together and actually start washing it and pushing it away in an orderly fashion. You can do it!

Tandem trips for two

Oh, how wonderful it would be to live in an Instagram-filtered montage of riding through fields and winding cobbled streets on a tandem made for two with Barry Manilow softly playing in the background. (Or another, much more relevant singer/songwriter.) Romantic bike rides are dreamy. Just ignore the fact that helmets are the surest way of making even someone as flawless as Beyonce look like the unsexiest human being on the planet.

Tough training

Training for a cycling event calls for early starts, strict schedules and picky diets. This doesn’t make for the most exciting Tinder bio, but it’s important to be honest I suppose. If you’re happy to leave a lovely person slumber in your nice warm bed while you battle the elements outside – then go for it! Otherwise, find an early bird.

Playing third wheel (literally)

It’s going to take someone pretty darn special to usurp your bike’s pride of place in your life. Can your new significant other compete with the fine frame, firm tyres and oiled up chains? Sometimes, the bike’s just gotta come first and they have to know this from the start.

Financial sacrifices

‘Babe, shall we go out to Nando’s for dinner tonight?’

‘No, I just spent half a month’s wage on new tyres.’

*Door slams and s/he’s never to be seen again*

Avoid this situation by dating someone who prefers a cheap night of Netflix and chill to fine dining and dancing. Although it is important to spend money on spouses as well as bikes, even if it’s just a little teeny-tiny bit.

Hip hangouts

Cycling cafes are fast becoming the hipster hangout du jour. But we all secretly fancy hipsters, right? The atmosphere in these cafes is friendly, fun and totally positive about cycling. Chances are, anyone you meet who hangs out in one of these hip haunts will have a similar love of all things bikes. They’re probably, like, uber cool too. Maybe even cooler than you to be honest.

‘I’ll pick you up at 8…on my bike’

There are some cyclists in the world who are very nice, good, decent people, but sometimes they prefer driving a car or taking public transport to cycling. Especially on date nights. They at least might prefer to take a romantic trip on the 78 bus or Jubilee line after a night of bad pizza and cheap beer. Compromise is key here, unless the thought of boarding a London bus brings you out in a rash.

The next Cycle Speed Dating event takes place at Look Mum No Hands! on the 26th September.

Dustin Johnson Bests Jordan Spieth in Northern Trust Playoff

Forget McGregor vs. Mayweather, the big fight came Sunday in Old Westbury, New York.

In a finish fit for a Major, world No. 1 Dustin Johnson knocked off No.3 Jordan Spieth on the first hole of a playoff completing a rally from five stroke back earlier in the round.

Johnson sank a gorgeous 17-foot par putt on No. 18 to force a playoff, then crushed a 341-yard drive on the playoff hole to set up a 4-foot birdie putt for the win.

“It was fun to be in the hunt again and know that my game is going to hold up under pressure,” Johnson said. “I feel like the game is finally back in form like it was before the Masters.”

Spieth started the day up three shots and when he buried a 30-foot birdie putt on No. 5, the lead was up to five strokes. It was Johnson’s 16th career victory on the PGA Tour.

Winning the event gives Johnson 2,000 FedExCup points and runs his total for the season to 4,466, the new leader. Spieth gets 1,200 for finishing second and is up to 3,871 points. Former leader Hideki Matsuyama drops to fourth after missing the cut and Justin Thomas, who earned 355 points, is now third with 3,044.

The top 100 players make the cut to the Dell Technologies Championship next week.  Mr. Lucky was Michael Kim who fell from 95th to 100th but still made the cut.

Jordan Spieth Roars to Lead at Northern Open

Jordan Spieth roared to the lead at the Northern Trust on Saturday on Saturday,  shooting a 64 on Saturday to reach 12-under, taking a 3-stroke lead over world No. 1 Dustin Johnson in the process.

Winning the first leg of the FedEx Cup is a huge advantage towards winning the overall title, something Spieth did just two years ago.

Spieth was 1-over through two holes, then ripped off four birdies in the six holes to take the lead. He put together three more birdies in a row between 14 and 16 to take the lead for good. Johnson had four birdies and one bogey to shoot a 67. Four men are tied for third: Matt Kuchar, Jon Rahm, Patrick Reed and Paul Casey.

The other top players in the world aren’t fairing as well as Johnson and Spieth. Rory McIlroy is +1 while Hideki Matsuyama missed the cut entirely.

UK’s Horsey Takes 2-Stroke Lead in Denmark

Here’s the trick at the Made in Denmark tournament. Shoot a 64, take the lead.

David Horsey shot a 64 on Saturday to take a 2-stroke lead into the final round on Sunday. He’s at 14-under, two strokes ahead of American Julian Suri.

“I really like this golf course, something about it suits my eye so I come in here with good vibes again and the atmosphere coming up 16 is something else, it must be like walking out in a football stadium with 70,000 people cheering for you. I actually said to my caddie, I think I was more nervous on that putt on 16 than I was to win the tournament two years ago,” Horsey said. “Leading by two so I’ll just focus on myself and go out and play the same sort of golf as I have today. It would be nice to add another Made In Denmark trophy to the cabinet so we’ll see what we can do.”

The real story of the day is who’s tied for third, three strokes off the lead.

Yes, it’s American John Daly, who is 3 strokes off the lead at 11-under.  He shot a 65 on Saturday after stroking four birdies on the front nine. He had just one blemish on his card a bogey on No. 16, which he also bogeyed on Friday.

Daly has not won a non-Champions event since 2004. he’s currently 51. His only regular season Euro Tour win was the 2001 BMW International Open. His 65 was his lowest round on the European Tour since 2008 when he fired a 62 at the Hong Kong Open.

Steve Webster Holds 1 Stroke Lead in Denmark

England’s Steve Webster shot a 1-under 70 to take sole possession of the lead at the Made in Denmark Open on Friday.

He’s being tracked by four competitors at 7-under, England’s David Horsey, India’s SSP Chawrasia,  Scotland’s Marc Warren, and Ireland’s Paul Dunne.

The hottest of those four is Warren, who fired a 7-under 64, birdying the first five holes in a row and six of the first seven. He added two birdies on 13 and 14.

Webster’s Day 1 co-leaders did not fare nearly as well as he did. Australia’s Wade Orsmby shot a 1-over 72 to drop two shots off the lead. Britain’s Matt Wallace followed up his 64 with a 3-over 74, with a miserable triple-bogey 8 on No. 4 and a double-bogey 6 on No. 13.

“I have to be honest and say I haven’t been thinking too much about the golf this week,” he said. “My mind has really been thinking about my nan back home because she had a nasty fall at the weekend. Thankfully she is making a recovery and maybe taking my mind away from the golf has been a good thing.

“It was very tough out there today. It was gusting to 30 miles per hour and was mostly a cross-wind off the left which is very difficult to play in. But I played well and was very patient – anything under par today feels like a 65 yesterday so I’m very happy.”

Russell Henley Day 1 Leader at Northern Trust

Russell Henley fired an opening-round 64 to upstage the No. 1 player in the world and take the early lead at the Northern Trust, the opening tournament of the FedEx Cup, on Thursday.

Henley stroked eight birdies, seven of them on putts of 12 feet or fewer. He also put an 80-foot chip in for a birdie.

“I don’t know what the key is, or the secret,” Henley said. “I just tried to hit the fairway, make sure I hit the green when I was in the fairway, and the greens are great and I rolled in a couple of putts.”

Dustin Johnson is a stroke behind Henley with his best start since before the fall that kept hi out of The Masters in April. He is 5-under and had three birdies in his last six holes at Glen Oaks.

“Today was much easier than it has been in the past,” Johnson said. “I’ve been saying it’s close and I’ve seen signs of it. But today was the first day where I felt like all day I was really in control of the swing. Hit a lot of really good shots. Drove it well. Did everything really well. It’s the first time in a long time I’ve done that.”
