Tiger Woods Returns Thursday at Hero World Challenge

Admit it, you’re a little excited.

Tiger Woods returns to the world of professional golf on Thursday at his own hosted Hero World Challenge in The Bahamas, claiming to be pain free after having not played golf in 10 months professionally.

The powers that be are treating it a bit like the moon landing. All four of Woods’ rounds will be televised.  The first two on the Golf Channel from 12:30-4:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday (Eastern Time), then Saturday and Sunday on NBC.

Woods is partnered with 2017 PGA Player of the Year Justin Thomas. Woods has won the award 10 times.

Eight of the world’s top 10 players are in the field. Reigning #1 Dustin Johnson is partnered with defending US Open champion Brooks Koepka at 12:16 p.m. while the top two finishers in last season’s Race to Dubai – Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose – tee off together at 11:43 a.m.

Jordan Spieth is part of the final pairing of the day with Matt Kuchar at 12:38 p.m.

2017 in Review: The Rise of Jon Rahm

How strong was Jon Rahm’s 2017 season? Enough so that he finished higher in the Official World Golf Rankings then the most famous Spanish golfer in the world, the guy who won the Masters last April.

With all due respect to Sergio Garcia, Rahm raced past him in 2017, rising to No. 4 in the world by the end of the year, which he capped with a victory at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

Rahm, who just turned 23 in October, wasn’t a true surprise for great things on the European Tour. He was the No. 1 ranked amateur in 2015 and attended US golf powerhouse college Arizona State.

That got him invitations to the 2016 US Open, where he finished tied for 23rd as an amateur, and the 2016 Open Championship, at which point he had turned pro and finished tied for 59th.

He started his 2016-2017 season with two top 15 finishes on the PGA Tour, then delivered his first career title with a 13-under 275 at the Farmers Insurance Open in late February. He fired a final-round 65. Two weeks later, he finished tied for fifth at Pebble Beach.

From there on, the world was put on notice by young Mr. Rahm, who headed to the WGC season, taking third in Mexico City with a 12-under 72 and finishing as the runner-up at the Dell Technologies Match Play.

Next came a tie for 10th at the Shell Houston Open and then his first Masters, which saw him struggle for the first time in to months, but still finish tied for 27th.

He shook off the Major shock by taking fourth at the Wells Fargo Championship and tying for second at the Dean & Deluca Invitational.

He slumped a bit in the summer in the US, but that was probably because he was tearing up the links overseas. He finished 10th at the Open de France, then won the Irish Open, pulling his first million-euro payday.

It wouldn’t be his last. Although he struggled in all four Majors – cut at the US Open , tying for 44th at The Open Championship and 58th at the PGA Championship – he came on in the fall, finishing in the top seven in four straight PGA tournaments to close that tour’s season.

Think about that. Four straight weeks against the top talent in the US during the Fedex Cup postseason. He took third at the Northern Trust, fourth at the Dell Technologies Championship, fifth at the BMW Championship and tied for second at the TOUR Championship. Combined score at those four events? 43 strokes under par.

A month later, he won the season-ending European Tour tournament in Dubai with a 19-under 269.  For the season, he gained 378.51 points. The only players to pick up more for the year were Dustin Johnson (445.56), Jordan Spieth (433.63) and Justin Thomas (440.19).

Wade Ormsby Claims Win at Hong Kong Open

Wade Ormsby scored his first title on the European Tour , rallying from four strokes down on the back nine to win the UBS Hong Kong Open.]

SSP Chawrasia blew his big lead with a triple bogey on No. 9 and Ornsby used some clutch putting to take a 2-stroke lead to the final hole.

“It means a lot to me,” said a tearful Ormsby. “I’ve played a lot of golf in Europe, everywhere, and a few bumps along the way but it’s pretty cool to get a win this late in your career.

“I didn’t think it would take this long but first one’s always pretty special. I said at the start of last year, I want to play a Major and win a tournament before my career is done so I’ve done both those things this year. I’m really happy about that.”

Ormsby finished with a 68-68-65-68 – 269, a stroke ahead of Americans Julian Suri and Paul Peterson, Sweden’s Alexander Bjorn and Spain’s Rafa Cabrera Bello.

Suri bogeyed 17 to miss out on  a playoff and Bjork did likewise on No. 18. Cabrera-Bello was up a stroke going into 17, then bogeyed 18.

Race to Dubai 2017 winner Tommy Fleetwood finished fifth at 9-under. Ageless wonder Miguel Angel Jimenez, who will turn 54 in a little more than a month, fired a final-round 63 to finish sixth.

Australia’s Cameron Davis Wins Open

Young Cameron Davis blew away the field on Sunday with a 7-under 64 to race by former No. 1 Jason Day for the title at the Australian Open.

Just 22, Davis was 8 strokes behind Day entering the final round, but put together six birdies and an eagle to wind up at 11-under, one stroke ahead of Jonas Blixt and Matt Jones. The eagle came from 220 feet out.

“I always felt like if I play my very best golf I’d be able to compete,” Davis said. “I’m going to try my best to come down from the excitement I’ve obviously got after winning this and then it’s another big week that we’ve got to get on top of.”

Day fired a final-round, 2-over 73 to finish in fifth place and conclude the 2017 season without a victory, the first time that’s happened since 2013.

“It’s obviously a little bit disappointing to come out and not finish it, but I’ve just got to kind of look back on it and see what I need to do for next time, because you can’t be perfect all the time and I played three terrific rounds and I just didn’t put it together on Sunday,” Day said.

“When you hold the lead and when everyone is expecting you to win, there’s a bit of added pressure. I was on the wrong side of momentum and if I could just get on the right side of momentum it may have been a different outcome.”

Davis wasn’t in the final group, so his day concluded with a lot of nervous waiting around until Blixt missed a 9-foot putt that would have forced a playoff.

Faxon: Tiger Woods looks “pain-free” in round

Brad Faxon won eight PGA Tour titles in his career but never experienced a round like he did on Thursday.

Faxon was part of a quartet featuring current No. 1 Dustin Johnson, 14-time Major winner Tiger Woods and US President Donald Trump.

“Tiger looked great to me,” Faxon wrote for Golfweek.com. “He was happy and, more than anything, he’s finally pain-free. The issues he had with the back the last couple of comebacks seem to be gone. He looked effortless, he looked free, he had some power.”

Faxon said on the 10 holes where Johnson and Woods both used a driver, each outdrove the other 5 times.

Woods is making another comeback starting next week at his own Hero World Challenge. He played just two tournaments last year, shooting a 4-under at the Hero World Challenge and then missing the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open.

He missed the entire 2016 season injured after playing 11 events in 2015, finishing in the top 10 once.

He only played 7 events in 2014 due to injuries.  His last PGA victory came on August 4, 2013, at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Jon Rahm Rises to #4 in World Rankings

Jon Rahm’s win at the DP World Tour Championships saw the Spaniard rise to #4 in the world, his highest ranking yet.

“It’s hard to sum it up,” said Rahm. “An incredible week, I could not be more proud of what I’ve done this week. It could be very easy to just be content with getting the award and just being here and trying to play the best. Having the weekend that I’ve had, actually shooting 12 under on the last 36 holes, bogey-free round today, it’s really special. I didn’t plan on being here at the beginning of the year and I sure didn’t plan on winning it so it’s an incredible feeling.”

Rahm is one of five players not in the top 10 at the end of 2016 to inhabit the space. Rahm is the most amazing of their stories, rising from 137th to fourth. He is averaging 8.6345 points per tournament, within striking distance of #3 Justin Thomas’s 8.9034.

Rahm switched places with Hideki Matsuyama.  In other top 10 news, Rory McIlroy idle with an injury, fell two spots to No. 10 in the world.
