WGC-Mexico Championship Preview

The first big golf tournament of 2018 is upon us with Mexico’s Club de Golf Chapultepec as the host.  Expect long drives with the thin air – the course is 2,400 meters above sea level.

The course is a par 71 and 6,703 meters in length.

World No. 1 Dustin Johnson is back to defend his title after edging out Tommy Fleetwood by 1 stroke and by 2 strokes over Ross Fisher and Jon Rahm.

Johnson is after his third win in four years in this tournament slot.  He won the WGC-Cadillac Championship in 2015 as well.

Looking to make history of his own is England’s Justin Rose, who finished last year red-hot and won the HSBC Championship at the end of last year. A win this weekend would let Rose join Johnson and Tiger Woods as the only men to win back-to-back WGC titles.

Woods is not in action this week for the simple fact that he’s not qualified. His 11th-place finish at last week’s Honda Classic notwithstanding, Woods is ranked outside the top 300 in the Official Golf World Rankings

There are some notable withdrawals in the field as well. Jason Day is out as his mom undergoes tests after having surgery for lung cancer. European Tour stalwarts Rory McIlroy and Henrik Stenson are both out by choice to prepare for Valspar. Hideki Matsuyama and Brooks Koepka are both nursing injuries carefully with the Masters about a month away.

European Tour: Tshwane Open Preview

The European Tour returns to South Africa this week with the Tshawne Open kicking off at the Pretoria Country Club in Waterkloof on Thursday March 1.

Here are some things to watch for and some facts to know about this week’s action.

The Course: Pretoria was designed by Bob Grimsdell and is a Parklands Golf Course with a par of 72. Its length is 6,459 meters. The course originally opened in 1910 and was redesigned in 2004–2005. It is consistently rated among the top 50 courses in South Africa.

Native Sons: If you want to win in South Africa, your best bet is to be South African. The Tshwane Open started in 2013 and has been won ever year but one by a native, including:

  • Dawie van der Walt (2013)
  • George Coetzee (2015)
  • Charl Schwartzel (2016)
  • Dean Burmester (2017)

Last Year:  South Africa’s Burmester finished the tournament with back-to-back 65s to win by three strokes over Spain’s Jorge Campillo. The two were tied through 54 holes at 12-under. It was Burmester’s first win on the European Tour after racking up six on the Sunshine Tour between 2013-2015.

Madsen Madness:  In 2015, Morten Madsen had one of the best two-hole stretches in tournament history when he aced the par-3 No. 8 and followed that with an eagle 3 on the par-5 ninth to pick up four strokes in two holes.

Water Hazard: In 2016, Haydn Porteous went to extreme lengths – and extreme fashion – to get his approach start away from the water hazard on the No. 4 hole.  Right on the edge of a murky stream, Porteous took off his shoes, then rolled up his pants, then, for some reason remove his shirt to ensure he got the full range of movements before firing away . He wound up with a double bogey, but hey, you gotta love the guy’s effort.

Familiar Faces in the Field:

  • A presumably dried off Porteous
  • Darren Fichardt
  • George Coetzee
  • Dannny Willett
  • Bernd Ritthamer

Justin Thomas Jumps Ahead in FedEx Standings

American Justin Thomas is back in familiar territory at the top of the FedEx Cup standings.

Thomas’ win at the Honda Classic on Sunday saw him rise to 1,258 points on the season, a mere 11 points behind previous leader Patton Kizzrie.  Thomas has needed seven event to reach his total; Kizzire 10.

World No. 1 Dustin Johnson is third with 952 points in just four events and World No. 2 Jon Rahm is fourth with 936 points in six events.

Points accrue in every PGA sanctioned event over the course of the season. The top 125 players then participate in a post-season gamut of tournaments with higher payouts and points. The rankings reset each week with a number of players cut from the field.

The overall winner of the FedEx Cup wins an additional $10 million in bonus money.

Tiger Woods managed to pick up enough points by finishing tied for 11th to reach 100 points even through three events. That puts him 130th in the standings, just a few points out of the top 125.

Race to Dubai Standings

India’s Shubhankar Sharma remains the leader in the Race to Dubai standings with 748,074 through eight events. The lead won’t last given how many players are within striking distance with far fewer events played.

Tommy Fleetwood is second with 628,754 points in just three events. The top 60 players qualify for the post-season event.

Justin Thomas Takes Honda Classic in Playoff

Justin Thomas defeated Luke List in the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the Honda Classic on Sunday in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

It’s Thomas’ eighth career PGA title and his sixth in the past 13 months.  Thomas has won twice this season already.

List led the tournament after 36 and 54 holes and overcame two bogeys in the first four holes. He and Thomas both birdied the 18th hole when either one of them could have won it if the other had only managed a par.

Thomas went straight after the hole on the playoff instead of laying up. He won $1.188 million and 500 FedEx Cup points for the victory.

He is now 2-0 in playoffs on the PGA Tour. He nearly recorded an ace on the 18th to get into the playoffs, then hit his tee shot over the water on the green on the 18th and two-putted the winning birdie.

Alex Noren finished third, one stroke back. Tommy Fleetwood, who was at one point tied for the lead, wound up fourth after bogeying 14 and 15.

Tiger Woods flirted with a final-round run, getting to 3-under through eight holes. The bottom dropped out from there starting with a bogey on No. 9.  He got it back with a birdie on 14, but doubled 15 and bogeyed 16 to fall off the pace.

Eddie Pepperell Wins First Euro Tour Title

Eddie Pepperell withstood late charges from Oliver Fisher and Marcus Kinhult to win the Qatar Masters on Sunday, his first career title on the European Tour.

Pepperrell shot a 2-under 70, his worst score of the tournament, but a birdie on No. 16 – the fourth straight birdie he made on that hole – proved to be the difference.

“What a day,” he said. “Oli made it really tough and I made it tough for myself at the end there with the second shot at 18.

“I felt good all day, I felt comfortable. I didn’t feel that comfortable with my swing but I was in a great place mentally and I kept telling myself that I’m going to win this.

“This will give me confidence. When you win, you know you can win. I’ve always felt and believed I will win out here but it hadn’t happened before today. You’ve always got to take that step and that’s uneasy but at some point in everyone’s career they’ve got to do something for the first time. Hopefully this is not my last.”

Fisher, tied for the lead through 54, bogeyed three straight holes (4-6) to fall off the pace early, but blitzed back at the birdies on 14, 16 and 17. He had birdied 18 in the previous three rounds and could have forced a playoff with another but could only make a par.

Kinhult, one of only two players in the field to shoot under 70 all four days finished two strokes back at 16-under. Like Fisher, he was plagued with early miscues. A air of bogeys saw him 2-over through six holes, then he 6-under the rest of the way. No. 16 was his best weapon over the weekend; he made three birdies and an eagle there.

Nine other players finished within five strokes of the lead.

Luke List Leads Honda Classic Through 54

The hoped-for Tiger Woods explosion never came on Saturday. Instead Luke List kept playing smart confident golf to lead the Honda Classic through three rounds.

List fired a 4-under 66 to take the lead. He’ll need at least that good a score to win the tournament. Wily Tour veteran Webb Simpson and 2017 PGA Player of the Year Justin Thomas are each a single stroke back at 6-under.

It was List’s second straight 66 and only a bogey on 17 kept him turning in a perfect card.

Thomas had the low round of the day with a 65, taking the back nine with a 4-under 31.

Tommy Fleetwood, the reigning Race to Dubai Champion, and Day 3 co-leader Jamie Lovemark, are tied for fourth at 5-under.

Alex Noren, who shot a 65 in the opening round, put up another on Saturday to get back into contention. Noren eagled No. 18 to finish with a flourish.

The much-hyped third round for Tiger Woods never materialised, even though he shot his best round of the weekend,  a 1-under 69 that has him at even par and tied for 11th.  He birdied No. 18 for a second straight day to get himself to even par for the tournament seven shots behind List.
