Rory McIlroy and Thomas Pieters won again at the Ryder Cup on Saturday, taking the 14th, 15th, and 16th holes to defeat Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson 4&2.
The win was part of the Europeans’ 2-and 1/2 to 1-and-1/2 advantage in points that pulled Team Europe within a 6-1/2 to 5-1/2 gap of the US after the Americans started out with a 4-0 lead on Friday morning.
McIlroy and Pieters won three of the first five holes, but Fowler and Mickelson cut it to one hole y taking 9 and 10.
In other matchups Saturday morning, the US’ Brandt Snedeker and Brooks Koepka defeated Henrik Stenson and Matthew Fitzpatrick 3&2. With the match tie, the Americans rattled off wins on 13, 15, and 16 to take the point.
Justin Rose and Chris Wood edged Jimmy Walker and Zach Johnson 1 up, but the real heroes for the Europeans were Sergio Garcia and Rafa Cabrera Bello, who rallied from down 4 holes after 12 to halve with Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth. The Europeans won 13, 15, 16, and 17 to deny the Americans the full point.
