American Paul Peterson broke through to win the D+D REAL Czech Masters on Sunday, his first European Tour title. It was just his 23rd event on the Tour. He’s the 11th first-time winner in 2016, but only the seventh left-hander to win an event on Tour.
“This is the best feeling in the world,” Peterson said. “My team and I have put in so much hard work and long hours by everybody and I’m just so happy.”
The tournament was a tale of two halves. Defending champion Thomas Pieters shot 67-67 on the first two days to lead Peterson by eight strokes. But Peterson shot 64-67 on Saturday and Sunday to rally for a one-shot victory.
Peterson’s 64 on Saturday was highlighted by eight birdies without a blemish but left him one stroke short of Pieters. They flip-flopped places on No. 1, then back the other way on No. 2. Peterson birdied No. 3 to draw even.
At the turn, Peterson was up a stroke, but still hard to birdie No. 18 to finish a stroke ahead of Pieters, who used the strong finish to move up to 24th in the Race to Dubai standings.
