Australia’s Marcus Fraser erupted for a career-best round of 62 to take a 3-stroke lead halfway through the Italian Open on Friday. The 39-year-old is in search of his fourth European Tour title, the last coming at the Maybank Championship Malaysia in 2016.
He’s tied for the top spot at 13-under with the UK’s Matt Wallace, who shot a 65 on Friday. The two have a 2-stroke lead over Kriadech Aphibarnrat and Jamie Donaldson. Defending champion Francesco Molinari is all alone in fourth at 10-under.
After hiting five straight pars to start his round, Fraser birdied six of the next seven and seven of the next nine, including five straight from No. 8 to No. 12.
He added birdies on 14, 17 and 18 to finish the back nine in just 29 strokes.
Wallace eagled No. 9 to reach the turn at 4-under. He added two birdies on 14 and 15 just as he had on Thursday to shoot a 65.
Defending champion Molinari was 2-under at the break but bogeys on 10 and 17 kept him from getting back further in the mix.
