Matthew Fitzpatrick Rallies to Win Omega

Rising UK star Matthew Fitzpatrick won the Omega European Masters Sunday on the third hole of  playoff against Scott Hend

Playing No. 18 on a series of sudden-death playoffs, Hend watched as Hend struggled to a bogey on the third extra hole to take the fourth European Tour title of his career.

Down four strokes through 54 holes, Fitzpatrick shot a 64, tied for the lowest round of the tournament, to catch Hend. He had a chance to win the tournament outright by bogeyed No. 17.

“I’m delighted,” he said. “It’s one that I’ve always wanted to win. I love playing this golf course, from the first ever year I came as an invite in 2014 it’s one that has really stood out on my schedule and I always want to come back and play.”

After shooting 64 and 63 to start the tournament, Hend slipped back with a 1-over 71 on Saturday and struggled out of the gate on Sunday, going 2-over through four holes before stroking three birdies between holes 5 and 9. He was 1-under on the back nine.

I had the opportunity and I didn’t take it. It’s just what happens when you don’t take your opportunities. I hit a good bunker shot on the 18th in regulation play to get into the play-off,” Hend said. I didn’t play as nicely in the afternoon but it is what it is. Fitzpatrick played great to win. He’s a good champion.”

Fitpatrick rattled off seven birdies over the net 11 holes to catch and briefly pass Hend.
