Surely, his fellows thought, that 65 on the opening round was the most that he would do. Then he did it again on Saturday.
As such the 23-year-old American reached 11-under through 54 holes on at Royal Birkdale, taking a 3-shot lead over fellow American Matt Kuchar, who fired a 66 to sit at 8-under.
It will take a monumental effort from anyone beyond Kuchar to have a chance at catching Spieth, barring a collapse reminiscent of the American’s meltdown at the Masters last year when he choked away a 5-stroke lead with nine holes to go.
Spieth hit 5 birdies and no bogeys for his second 65 in three days. Kuchar could have at least tied for the lead or had it outright, but he double-bogeyed No. 16, ruining a three-birdie in four-hole stretch.
Canada’s Austin Connelly and US Open champion Brooks Koepka are tied for third at 5-under, with record-setting Branden Grace fifth at 4-under. Grace became the first player to ever shoot a 62 at a Major.
He racked up eight birdies without a bogey.
