Brandt Snedeker Smokes Field at Fiji

American Brandt Snedeker turned the Fiji International into a personal showcase, shooting a 16-under 272 to win the tournament by nine strokes on Sunday.

Snedker’s 69-65-70-68 at Natadola Bay Golf Club easily outdistanced second-place Mike Hendry of Australia (7-under, 281). It was Snedeker’s first win on the European Tour, 12th overall as a pro, and second this year, following his victory at the Farmers Insurance Open last February.

It’s just the fifth time Snedker has played an event on the European Tour. The 9-stroke margin of victory was the widest on the European Tour this year, besting Charl Schwartzel’s eight at the Tshawne Open.

Not a fortnight for Snedeker, who also notched three points in the US in its 17-11 win over Europe in the Ryder Cup.

“To go out there and the play the way I did at the weekend, extend my lead, I’m very happy with how comfortable I felt in that situation,” he said. “I never really gave any back or did anything that would cause myself to lose the golf tournament. I’m just building all that positive stuff right now so it’s a lot of fun. It kind of worked out perfectly today because it was playing so tough, nobody could really make a run, there were no low scores out there so that made my job a lot easier.

Snedeker joins Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler, Jimmy Walker, and Paul Peterson as Americans to win on the European Tour this year.
