The health advantages of marriage

Follow me on Twitter @RobShmerling

“My wife and I were happy for 20 years. Then we met.”

That’s just one of many Rodney Dangerfield jokes that don’t exactly paint a rosy picture of marriage. But, according to a new study, being married might just save your life.

Okay, that might be an overstatement. But there is fascinating — and compelling — research suggesting that married people enjoy better health than single people. For example, as compared with those who are single, those who are married tend to

  • live longer
  • have fewer strokes and heart attacks
  • have a lower chance of becoming depressed
  • be less likely to have advanced cancer at the time of diagnosis and more likely to survive cancer for a longer period of time
  • survive a major operation more often.

This doesn’t mean that just being married automatically provides these health benefits. People in stressful, unhappy marriages may be worse off than a single person who is surrounded by supportive and caring friends, family, and loved ones. Interestingly, many of these health benefits are more pronounced for married men than for married women.

A newly recognized “marriage benefit” for the heart?

A recent study of 25,000 people in England found that among people having a heart attack, those who were married were 14% more likely to survive and they were able to leave the hospital two days sooner than single people having a heart attack.

This study was presented at a medical conference, so the results should be considered preliminary. But it does raise some questions. For example, were the heart attacks of single people more severe than those in people who were married? And was the health of the single heart attack victims worse before the heart attack than that of the married group?

The headlines describing this study might have single people feeling even more pressured than before to find a marriage partner. I think that would be unfortunate, as a study of this type can only conclude there is an “association” or link between marriage and better health outcomes after a heart attack — but it cannot say with confidence that marriage is the reason for that benefit.

How does this work?

Given the growing body of evidence linking marriage with better health, it’s worth asking why such a connection might exist. A number of researchers have explored this question. Here are some of the more prominent theories.

  • It’s all about immune function. Studies have found that people in happy relationships have stronger immune function than those who are not. And, cortisol tends to be released in lower amounts in married people as compared with those who are single. That may be important because cortisol levels tend to reflect levels of stress, and high cortisol levels can impair immune function.
  • Your behavior improves with marriage. Married people may take fewer risks, eat better, and maintain healthier lifestyles, on average, compared with single people. There is also evidence that married people tend to keep regular doctors’ appointments and follow doctors’ recommendations more often than single people.
  • Mental health is better when you’re married. Poor social supports (as might be more likely for those who are single) have been strongly linked with higher rates of depression, loneliness, and social isolation, which have in turn been associated with poorer health outcomes.
  • Married people have better health before getting married. It’s reasonable to wonder whether people with medical problems (or who are prone to them due to unhealthy habits) are less likely to get married; that would leave healthier people getting married and that could account for the “marriage health benefit.” But, some studies have actually found that unhealthy men tend to marry at a younger age and divorce less often than healthy men.

None of the evidence in support of these theories proves (or refutes) a health benefit to marriage. So, if there is a health benefit to marriage, the precise reason is not known. But researchers continue to study the question.

What’s next?

I think that in the future we will have a better understanding of the health effects of social supports, including marriage. Then, our focus can turn to another important question: so what? If marriage is truly a predictor of better health, can this knowledge be used to improve health? For example, if a single person has a heart attack, is there some way that this “higher risk” individual can be treated differently to improve the outcome?

It seems likely that Mr. Dangerfield’s comments about marriage were mostly (or totally) for laughs — but even if his marriage made him miserable (as he so often suggested), it may still have been good for his health.

Danish Pair Win World Cup of Golf

Denmark’s Soren Kjeldsen and Thorbjorn Olesen cruised to a 4-stroke win at the ISPS HANDA World Cup of Golf at the Kingston Health Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia on Sunday.

Kjeldsen and Olesen combined for a 6-under 66 to hold off Franche’s Victor Dubuisson and Romain Langasque and two other teams by four strokes. The Frenchmen shot a 63 on Friday.

But nothing could top the Danish pair’s 60 on Friday.  The two ravaged the course, recording eagles on No. 4 and No. 8 reach the turn at 29 . They added five straight birdies to start the back nine and totaled eight birdies on the day.

Americans Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker also finished at 16-under.  Sweden’s Alex Noren and David Lingmerth had the round of the day on Sunday, shooting a 10-under 62 to finish at 15-under for the tournament. The pair stroked 10 birdies on the day without a single bogey.

It’s the first time Denmark has won the tournament.

“It’s been an absolutely incredible week,” said Kjeldsen. “I’ve enjoyed it so much.

“I’ve enjoyed the camaraderie with Thorbjørn. I’ve been so impressed by his game, his attitude, and I think we’ve had a great time and that reflects in the result.”

Henrik Stenson Claims Dubai Title

Henrik Stenson’s Sunday 65 got him into a tie for ninth and allowed him to win the Race to Dubai title for the second time in his career.

Stenson amassed 5.289 million points in just 16 events to easily outpace second-place Danny Willett, who finished with 4.419 million in 25 events.

Stenson’s fellow Swede Alex Noren finished third with 3.995 million, followed by Dubai runner-up Tyrrell Hatton at 3.690 million.

Rory McIlroy was fifth at 3.337 million and Dubai winner Matthew Fizpatrick was sixth at 2.715 million.

Stenson also won the title in 2013. He broke McIlroy’s two-year run as champion.

His success in his 16 events this year was remarkable. He finished in the top 10 11 times. He won twice – the BMW International Open in June and The Open championship in July, his first Major.

He finished second three times and third once. He ended the year with six straight Top 10 finishes.

Fitzpatrick Rises to Dubai Title

England’s young Matthew Fitzpatrick won the biggest non-Major on the European Tour schedule last Sunday, outduelling fellow Brit Tyrell Hatton in the final round to win the DP World Tour Championship.

It was a remarkable finish as Hatton led by one stroke through 17 only to bogey the 18th. Fitzpatrick never faltered sliding home a birdie putt to win the title, his third on the European Tour in his short career.

It means the world. To win one of these Final Series events is really special, and this one in particular – obviously the last tournament of the year. For me to win on the final week of the year is special,” Fitzpatrick said. “Four footers aren’t normally what you want for the win but to finish it off like that makes it a lot sweeter.

It was a near miss for Hatton, who was after his second European Tour title.

“Obviously it’s a bitter pill to swallow, but it’s been a great week and for me it’s been the best year of my life. So I can’t get too downbeat, but these things happen,” Hatton said.

“You know, it is what it is and I’m happy with how the week went. I’m sure hopefully in the future, I’ll take my next chance.”

Sweden’s Henrik Stenson shot a final-day 65 to tie for ninth place and claim the overall Race to Dubai title. It’s the second time he’s won the title in the last four years.

Fitzpatrick finished with a 17-under 271, followed by Hatton’s 16-under 272.

Charl Schwartzel finished third with a 14-under 274. Ironically, Rory McIlroy, one of Stenson’s chief competitors for the Dubai title, also shot a 65 and tied the Swede for ninth.

Danny Willett, who was in second place in the Race to Dubai standings, finished tied for 50th at 1-under. He fell out of contention when he staggered to a 76 on Saturday.

Vulpine Hoy Beacon Waterproof Jacket Review

We have thus far reviewed two items from the new Vulpine autumn/winter range, the Commuter jeans and the Waxed British Harrington. Both items have been great and we have been really impressed by the attention to detail, fit and workmanship of the products. The final piece we asked to try out is one from the Hoy line, the new Beacon Waterproof Jacket.

What is it?

The Beacon is a high visibility fully waterproof jacket – boy is this thing bright! As it is from the Hoy line, it is somewhat fitted as it it aimed at road riding in the winter. Even though this is aimed at the road market, I felt it had all the requirements for a great commuting jacket so wanted to try it out.

Beacon Waterproof Jacket

So bright it glows on surfaces

The jacket is made of a thick ripstop material. It is a three layer waterproof, meaning all the layers of material are bonded together. this makes it more packable than a 2 layer with a loose internal layer, and it also makes it easier to wear over clothes, in my opinion. I have always preferred 3 layer waterproofs and have found them to not be as stifling and hot as 2 layer.

The jacket has vents on the side like their Utility rain jacket which we reviewed last year. There are reflective patches on the shoulders which are  a more rubbery/frictiony material. These are perforated to make them breathable but they are great to hold rucksack straps in place.

The fabric at the bottom on the front of the jacket is a dull khaki colour (it kind of looks grey next to the yellow but is infuse khaki). The shaping is incredible flattering and it lends the jacket a very sophisticated air. In my opinion it makes it more attractive than the other high vis jackets on the market. The cut is quite aggressive, in that it is short at the front and long at the back for a speedy riding position.

There is reflective detailing on the sleeves – good for singling at junctions – and a large reflective Hoy logo on the back. Finishing it all off is a small front pocket, big enough for a credit card or two and some keys.

The good

The Beacon Waterproof jacket looks good. It is of course quite in your face and so if you really dislike neon then I am sure you would disagree with me. However, fit wise it looks great, and as I have said, compared to other high vis cycling jacket (I have had an Altura Night Vision Evo in the past) it is very classy. I have had quite a few complements while wearing it.

Beacon Waterproof

The material is really bombproof and robust without being too stiff or un-packable, and it beads water really well. It is quite warm as it has elastic cuffs and totally cuts the wind, so has really come into its own in the last few weeks and completely protects me from the elements. With a simple merino long sleeve top underneath it is warm enough for those of you who heat up while cycling to wear in temps right down to small single digits.

I have found that this is a great commuting jacket. It may have been designed for road riding, but it pulls double duty very well.  It packs down into my bag well and doesn’t crease at all (not that that is a huge priority for me to be honest!).  I don’t feel that I miss the pockets and bells and whistles you find on my urban orientated jackets, in fact I love its simplicity – It is a jacket with a purpose: to keep you dry and seen and at this it excels.

The bad

The cut is a little limited for layering. If you are a cooler cyclist and don’t warm up much while cycling you might struggle to get warm enough stuff underneath. This is purely because the front is so raised in relation to regular city clothing (and I am not even tall – my medium on someone a few inches taller would have been even more extreme). This problem can be mitigated by tucking your fleece into your jeans/trousers which will in face keep you even warmer, but it is not just a chuck it on and go jacket.

As I found with the Utility jacket, the vents are somewhat hampered by rucksack straps. This is great for when it is really cold, but of course limits venting in warmer weather – it seems to be standard placing for these vents, not something specific to a road cycling jacket. This limiting combined with pretty tight, non-adjustable cuffs does make this a pretty warm jacket. If you are putting effort into your cycling or get hot when exercising then plan to only wear this in very cold weather. Which, to be fair, is what this jacket is actually aimed at.

Review Conclusion

I really like this jacket. It works very well in urban environments even though it is not the intended use. I definitely think that I have had a little more recognition on the road for its enhanced visibility – in the right light is is damn bright. At the same time, I don’t think it is particularly ugly jacket, so if you are a high visibility naysayer then you really aren’t sacrificing much style wise and I maintain that this is a more visible jacket than a plain black one and that can only be a good thing while cycling around at night and on misty mornings.

Mens Beacon Waterproof

Price wise the Beacon Waterproof is very reasonable at £160. It is inline with Gore jackets or other performance cycling waterproofs and it definitely matches up to them.

If you want your own jacket, it is available for men and women direct from Vulpine with free shipping for £160.

Have you tried any of the new Vulpine items? If so, what are your favourites?

Chicken and Dressing Sheet Pan Supper by Ree

dsc_4804I have partnered with Land O’ Lakes to bring you this deliciousness.

Have you ever wanted a big taste of Thanksgiving without going through all the steps to make a huge turkey dinner? Well, I find myself craving Thanksgiving flavors throughout the year, and here’s a really simple sheet pan supper that can help you satisfy that craving if it hits you from out of nowhere! (Hint: This is always a great thing to whip up if you’re just cooking for two this Thanksgiving.)

You will adore this easy dinner!

dsc_4748First, prep some basic dressing/stuffing ingredients, starting with the veggies: Carrots, peeled and cut into chunks…

dsc_4752Celery, sliced…

dsc_4751And onion, cut into chunks. I used red onion because the color is so gorgeous, but any ol’ onion will do!

dsc_4754The bread for the dressing comes next, and you can put as much or as little effort into this step as you’d like. I used store-bought ciabatta bread and cut half a loaf into 1-inch pieces…

dsc_4753But I also used some homemade cornbread chunks. Just make your favorite recipe! And the cool thing is, you don’t have to stale the bread like you normally would for Thanksgiving dressing. The oven will take care of crisping things up.

dsc_4758All the veggies and bread go onto a rimmed sheet pan.

dsc_4760Toss them together, then nestle the chicken pieces, skin side up, all among the veggies and bread. I used bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs, but you can use a whole cut up chicken with different parts, or you can use boneless, skinless chicken legs or thighs. (I happen to love the skin. Call me crazy! Haha.)

dsc_4757Now mix up a simple combination of kosher salt, black pepper, ground sage, and ground thyme. It’s the flavor of turkey day!

dsc_4761Sprinkle a small amount of the seasoning mix on each piece of chicken, and a little bit over the veggies and bread.

dsc_4768And now it’s time to break out the hard stuff. I mean the good stuff! And when I say “good” I mean “heavenly.”

dsc_4770This is the perfect opportunity to use a half-stick of Land O Lakes® Salted Butter. They come in handy when you don’t need a whole stick of butter!

dsc_4775Cut the half-stick into small pieces…

dsc_4780And dot it around the whole pan! A half-stick is just right for this recipe, because you really just need the flavor (and glorious browning qualities) of the butter; you don’t need to rely on the butter to provide all the moisture for the dish since the chicken will help that along.

dsc_4791Place the pan into a preheated 425 degree oven for about 15 minutes, then remove the pan and carefully toss the veggies and bread so they’ll have a chance to cook evenly. Leave the chicken undisturbed so the skin gets nice and golden! Place the pan back in the oven.

dsc_480325 to 30 minutes later…look at that! Wow. Flavorful, incredible chicken…and the veggies and bread look irresistible. The butter gave everything a rich, delectable flavor, and well, I pretty much want to dive on in.

dsc_4804Let it sit for about 5 minutes, then serve it up and chow down!

Here’s the complete recipe. You’ve got to try it sometime, whether it’s at Thanksgiving time or all throughout the year.

Dubuisson’s 64 Leads Dubai Through 54

Victor Dubuisson fired an 8-under 64 to take a 1-stroke lead into the final round of the DP World Tour Championship Saturday in Dubai.

Dubuisson has a 1-stroke lead over Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts and the UK’s Matthew Fitzpatrick and Tyrell Hatton. Dubuisson’s two previous wins on tour have been at the Turkish Airlines Open.

Dubuisson was 3-under through five holes thanks to an eagle 2 on the par-4 372-yard No. 5. He bogeyed No. 6 but bounced back with birdies on 8 and 9, and racked up for more between No. 14 and 18.

Colsaerts and Fitzpatrick each shot a 66 and Hatton recorded a 67 as the three are tied at 12-under. Fitzpatrick, who has shot 69-69-66, is the only golfer in the tournament to shoot three sub-70 rounds.

Day Two co-leader Francesco Molinari, Day One leader Lee Westwood, and Spain’s Rafa Cabrera Bello are all two strokes back at 11-under.

Cabrera Bello had the best round of the tournament to date, a 9-under 63. Cabrera Bello had back-to-back birdies five different times, including knocking down six birdies between No. 11 and No. 18.

Day Two co-leader Sergio Garcia staggered to a 2-over 74. He bogeyed three of his first four holes on Saturday, and was 4-over at the turn after double-bogeying No. 9. He managed to get three strokes back with birdies on 10, 14, and 15, but bogeyed 17.

Rory McIlroy and Henrik Stenson are among a group tied for 22nd at 5-under. Danny Willett bombed out with a 4-over 74 to fall to 51st.
