Paul Casey Holds off Tiger Woods for Valspar Title

Everyone was so enamored with Tiger Woods and the men bunched around him – Patrick Reed, Brandt Snedeker, Justin Rose and rookie Corey Conners that nobody bothered looking any farther down the board to start Sunday at the Valspar Championship.

That proved to be a mistake.

England’s Paul Casey shot a final-round 65 to get to 10-under, then hung on as Woods and Reed both faltered on 18 to take the win, earning himself $1.17 million and 500 Fed Ex Cup points.

Starting earlier than the leaders, Casey was even par through three holes before birdying #4, #5 and #7 to hit the turn 3-under. He turned heads by birdying 11-13 in succession to become the leader in the clubhouse.

Reed came into the round at 6-under but immediately made his intentions known with an eagle 3 on #1. He moved into a tie for the lead with a birdie on #14, but bogeyed 18 to miss out on the playoff.

Woods started the day at -8 and was at -9 after a birdie on #1 but gave it back with a bogey on #4. he proceeded to par the next 12 holes before blowing the crowd’s minds with a 43-foot birdie on No. 17 to get to 9-under. A similar range putt stopped about 2-1/2 feet short of the hole on No. 18.

“I don’t know how he does it. … He’s always had an ability to deal with the distractions and sometimes draw from it, and I actually I want him to play brilliant golf, want him to win again because I want these kids to see what we dealt with for a long, long time,” Casey said of Woods. “It would be brilliant. I want to win this week. If I don’t win this week I want Tiger to win this week. I’m afraid to say that.”

2017 Masters champion Sergio Garcia shot a 65 like Casey to wind up fourth, 2 strokes off the lead at 8-under. Canadian rookie Connors took a 9-stroke nosedive from Round 3 to Round 4, winding up with a 6-over 77 and tied for 16th. Connors bogeyed #1 and #3 on the front nine, then #10 as well before a double on #13.

Matt Wallace Wins Hero Indian Open in Playoff

It wasn’t the ending the crowd wanted at the Hero Indian Open Saturday, but it was a thrilling finish.

England’s Matt Wallace defeated countryman Andrew Johnston in a one-hole playoff to take the title after local favourite Shubhankar Sharma fell apart in the final round after being tied for the lead through 54 holes.

Johnston was nearly perfect in regulation, shooting a bogey-free 6-under 66 to catch Wallace and force a playoff. Wallace had been close to perfect himself, shooting the front nine at 4-under and adding a birdie on #10. But he couldn’t add to it the rest of the way, and a bogey on #16 gave Johnston his opening, as he forced the tie with a birdie on 17.

Both finished regulation at 11-under. In the first extra hole, Wallace blasted a big drive while Johnston laid up. After playing brilliantly all day, Johnston’s birdie putt lipped out, giving Wallace two putts for the title.

“I played great,” he said. “Ever since being three over through eight at the start of the week I’ve played some of the best golf of my life and to do it in that style at the end there capped it off. I hit some really good shots and that play-off: I pumped it down there on the last and it went a long way and then a four iron went even further than I thought it would so I was jacked up a bit. To hit two shots like that is exactly why I play the game.”

The 27-year old Wallace has two European Tour wins now, both coming in the last 10 months. His maiden victory was last May at the Open de Portugal.

The pair of Brits finished three shots clear of the next-highest score, which came from American Sihwan Kim (-8).

Indian sensation Sharma showed his inexperience playing with a lead for the second straight week. He birdied two of first four holes, then went south with double bogeys on #5 and #7. He salavaged a birdie on #9 for a front-nine 37 after shooting 7-under on the front during the first three rounds.

He was just as uneven on the back nine, his string of holes went: bogey, birdie, bar, bogey, birdie, double bogey, bogey, par, birdie to finish the back at 3-over. He shot 73-64-72-75 for the tournament to finish tied for seventh at 4-under.

The European Tour takes next week off followed by the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin, Texas March 21-25. Another week off precedes The Masters April 5-8. The European Tour returns to its native soil on April 12-15 with the Open de Espana in Madrid.

Tiger Woods 1 Shot off Lead Headed for Sunday

Tiger Woods trailing by one stroke going into the final round used to mean an easy win was soon to come. This Sunday, who knows?

But Wood is sure to give the Valspar Championship its greatest ratings of all time because he’s a single stroke off the lead heading into Sunday.

To win, he’ll have to recall the great killer instinct that made him one of the greatest players of all time, but also catch rookie Corey Connors (-9).

“I’m excited,”  Woods said. “I’ve been ready to go. I’m excited to play. It’s going to be fun, lot of fun, and these [fans] have been great. They’ve been fired up, and it’s exciting for all of us.”

Woods isn’t the only one chasing Connors. He’s tied for second with Justin Rose and Brandt Snedeker.

Connors shot a 68 on Saturday. He is the only player in the field to shoot three sub-70 rounds this weekend. He was 3-under through  4 holes and was ahead by two strokes until he bogeyed 16.

Rose shot a 5-under on Saturday and was 4-under on the back nine with an eagle and two birdies.

Woods had the crowd’s backing as he went 3-under on the front nine. His ony stumble was a bogey on No. 14.

Tiger Woods Two Strokes off Lead at Valspar

A birdie on #14 and the crowd went bonkers. It didn’t matter that Tiger Woods was just 30 holes into the Valspar Championship; he’d just moved into the lead.

The spot at the top was short lived, but the result is the same. Tiger Woods is in contention for a PGA golf tournament title heading to the weekend for the first time in almost three years.

The Valspar Championships tickets just became a rock concert. Its broadcast this weekend just became Must-See TV.

“I’m up there,” Woods said at the conclusion of his early-morning start, a round that included no bogeys until the final hole. “At least I’m there with a chance going into the weekend. Today was a good day.

“I just need to get a little bit more tournament time in,” said Wood. “I think I’ve done that and I’m starting to get a better feel for it. I’m figuring the rhythm of the rounds. I’m hitting the shots. I don’t have a problem posting scores. I’m able to play more feel golf, just trying to figure out how to play golf again.”

To win his first title since 2014, Woods will have to get past rookie Corey Conners, who continues to lead the field at 6-under.

It’s Sharma fever as Rookie Ties for Indian Open Lead

If he was old enough, Shubhankar Sharma could probably run for mayor and win in New Delhi right now.

The 21-year-old golfing sensation wrote another chapter in his remarkable rise to fame as he shot an even-par to move into a first-place tie with Matt Wallace at the Hero Indian Open.

A late mistake cost Sharma the outright lead. He double-bogeyed No. 17, but salvaged a birdie on 18 to close with a 72.

“I’m just looking forward to playing out there again,” he said. “I just want to have fun. It’s the second week in the row I’m in the leading group. I’m going to draw from my experiences last week. I know it’s going to be a battle out there tomorrow and I’ll be ready for it.

“I kept telling my caddie that this is our home course, you can’t overpower this course. So, I told myself, just hang in there. I will hit a few bad shots and I understand that it’s all part of the game. You just have to stay patient.”

Wallace alo could have had a lead but staggered down the stretch with three bogeys between 13 and 17.  He’s 7-under for the tournament, but a whopping 5-over on the back nine through three rounds.

The two have a 1-stroke lead over Stephen Gallacher, who jumped 22 spots thanks to a 67 on Saturday. Gallacher was at even par through seven holes before eagling No. 8. He shot 5-under over the last 10 holes with four birdies, the eagle and a bogey.

Day Two leader Emilliano Grillo took a nosedive on the leaderboard, shooting a 6-over 78. Grillo lost three shots  in the first four holes of the tournament and was 3-over through 12 when real trouble hit. He double-bogeyed 13 and 14 back to back, then added another bogey on 15. He did birdie #18 for the third straight day to get one shot back.
