Jon Rahm Takes CareerBuilder Title in Playoff

Jon Rahm knocked off Andrew Landry in a four-hole playoff by one stroke to win the CareerBuilder Challenge by one stroke on Sunday in La Quinta, California.

It’s Rahm’s second PGA title in his short career and his fourth career win overall. All four have come in a 357-day span between January 29, 2017 and today. With the victory, he bypasses Jordan Spieth to become the new No. 2 golfer in the world. Spieth now looks like the elder statesman: Rahm won’t turn 24 until November.

“It’s hard to believe, to be honest, passing Jordan Spieth, three-time major champion,” Rahm said. “I only have two wins and he’s got 10-plus, right? I never thought I was going to be at this point in my life right now.”

Rahm was two strokes off the lead entering the final round, which saw Day Three leader Austin Cook crash and burn with a final-round 75 to wind up tied for 14th.

Rahm shot a 67 and Landry a 68 to wind up tied for the lead after 72 holes. Martin Piller, John Huh and Adam Hadwin tied for third at 20-under. Landry birdied 18 to force the tie, making up for a bogey on #6.

Rahm did not have a single bogey in the round. In the extra frame, both men recorded pars on the first three holes, playing #18 twice then #10. Rahm birdied #18 on the fourth hole while Landry could only muster another par.

“It’s been a fighting day,” Rahm said. “I’ve been a ball-striking clinic most of the week and in the playoff I was just not making the putts. I just got fortunate that none of us really made any and I was able to make the one that mattered. But then again, it was really supreme ball-striking on my part today. Especially, on the back nine, I hit the ball as good as I can.”

Sergio Garcia Cruises to Singapore Open Title

Sergio Garcia talked confidence in his preseason interviews.  He displayed it and then some this weekend in  Singapore, winning the Singapore Open by five strokes.

A third-round lightning delay forced Garcia to play 27 holes on Sunday, but he seemed unaffected, never dropping  a shot. He shot a closing-round 68, finishing with 10 straight pars to keep the competition unable to make up any ground.

“I’m extremely happy with how the week went. It was a tough day and a tough week, with the stopping and going. Fortunately, the weather held on, we were able to play and the people were able to enjoy it,” Garcia said. “Still, it was hard to play 27 holes under this heat and I can’t wait to get a cold shower.”

Over the entire 72 holes, Garcia made just three bogeys. It’s his sixth career win on the Asian Tour and 33rd overall. It’s his fourth title in the past 11 months: He won the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in February 2017, The Masters last April, and the Andalucia Valderrama Masters last October. Prior to the beginning of the hot streak, he had won just twice since 2012.

” I’m really pleased with everything right now. I still feel like I can get better and I can get even more comfortable. It’s still nice to play like how I did. I practiced a few weeks before coming here. I feel that I’m getting used to my new equipment. I came with some good confidence and wishing that I will play well. I was able to control my emotions quite well out there. I hit the ball solid the whole week and didn’t miss many shots.”

Fleetwood Rises to Win Abu Dhabi Again

Tommy Fleetwood saved the best for last with a dominating final-round 65 to defend his title at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship on Sunday.

He needed a 17-under a year ago in the desert to fend off Dustin Johnson and Pablo Larrazabal. This time it took a 22-under to hold off fellow Englishman Ross Fisher.

Fleetwood was nearly perfect on the back nine, firing birdies on #10, #12, #13, #15 #16 and #18 to blitz past the competition. He birdied #18 on all four days of the competition.

“It was pretty good on that back nine really,” said Fleetwood. “I think at the turn, it was just a few shots –  the up-and-down on ten, the up-and-down on 11, 13, got a bit lucky with the tee shot. When putts were going in like 15 and 16, you just feel like, could this be my day again. Then 18, I mean, forget the second shot, the up-and-down was one of the best up-and-downs I ever made. So happy days.”

It’s Fleetwood’s fourth career title on the European Tour, and his third in the last 365 days. He will move into the top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings on Monday for the first time in his career.

Fisher played well enough to win, shooting a final-round 69 to finish at 20-under. He looked close to unbeatable on the front nine, firing an eagle on #2

Rory McIlroy, playing for the first time since his injury, finished tied for third, shooting a final-round 70. He was within striking distance, 2-under at the turn, but parred the next eight holes in a row before bogeying #17 and birdying #18.

World #1 Dustin Johnson finished tied for ninth at 14-under.

Austin Cook Latest Leader at CareerBuilder Challenge

Is anyone actually out of contention at the CareerBuilder Challenge?

Through 54 holes, a staggering 51 players are at least 10 strokes under par. American Austin Cook leads the field at 19-under after firing an 8-under 64 on Saturday. Cook also shot 63 on Thursday.

Cook gave much of the credit to caddie Kip Henley.

“Kip said, ‘Let’s finish this like we did on the first day at the Nicklaus Course,’ ” said Cook. “We made a big par putt on 18 there, and he said, ‘Let’s just do the same thing. Let’s get this line right, and if you get the line right it’s going in.’ ”

He has a 1-stroke lead over Martin Pillear and Andrew Landry, and a 2-stroke lead over Scott Piercy and Jon Rahm.

Rahm is the obvious big-time threat given his dynamic 2017 season. Rah has shot 62-67-70 in the first three rounds.

“The course is firming up,” Rahm said. “I know if we have similar wind to today, if we shoot something under par, you’ll be way up there contesting it over the last few holes.”

Phil Mickelson missed the cut with a 74, finishing 4-under. He has not won a tournament since the 2013 Open Championship.

Jon Rahm’s 62 Leads CareerBuilder Challenge

European Tour 2017 Rookie of the Year Jon Rahm did exactly what you’re supposed to do when you’re the big fish in the pond on Thursday.

Dominate.

Rahm fired a 10-under 62 to take the early lead at the CareerBuilder Challenge in La Quinta, California. He recorded eight birdies and an eagle on the day, getting through the front nine at 6-under.

“You’re not going to make every single putt. You’re not going to hit every single shot perfect,” Rahm said. “I do feel like I could have made a couple more putts, just because I had so many that were makeable. But there’s a couple birdie putts, like the one on 14, that, if I’m being quite honest, I did not hit the line I wanted, and it still went in dead center.”

The 62 is the lowest round of his young PGA career.

“I feel super-rested and really in peace with my game, and I think it shows,” Rahm said. “Kapalua wasn’t the best ball-striking week of my life, but I was able to scramble really well and keep calm and have a good score. Today, it was a complete opposite. I had one of the best ball-striking days of my life and just had it going.”

He leads Americans Andrew Landry, Austin Cook and Jason Kokrak by a singe stroke.

PGA rookie Taylor Gooch is off to his second fine start, sitting at 7-under and tied for ninth.

Defending champion Hudson Swafford shot a 6-under 66 and is tied for 15th.

Fleetwood Shines at Abu Dhabi First Round

Tommy Fleetwood clearly isn’t satisfied with his breakout 2017 season.

The young Englishman kicked off the defence of his Race to Dubai title and his crown at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Thursday by firing a tournament-best 5-under 66.

“It’s a good golf course to hit 18 greens around,” Fleetwood said. “Just a good ball-striking round and nice to start the year off like that. Had control of my ball really from the get-go. Just sort of did what you need to do well around here to get a good score: I drove it well, got away with a couple of tee shots.”
Later in the day, Japan’s Hideto Tanihara also shot a 66 to tie Fleetwood for the lead.

Perhaps the most impressive part about Fleetwood’s 66 was the company he shot it in. His laying partners for the day were World No. 1 Dustin Johnson and 4-time Major winner Rory McIlroy.

“These two, I don’t know what I’ll do in my career and nobody knows what the future holds, but I think these two might be going down in the history books, so it will be nice to tell them that I played these two in a three-ball,” Fleetwood said.

In his first action in several months, McIlroy shot an impressive 69 to begin his comeback trail.

Johnson had four birdies but also four bogeys to record an even-par 72 in the opening round.
