Jordan Spieth Roars to Lead at Northern Open

Jordan Spieth roared to the lead at the Northern Trust on Saturday on Saturday,  shooting a 64 on Saturday to reach 12-under, taking a 3-stroke lead over world No. 1 Dustin Johnson in the process.

Winning the first leg of the FedEx Cup is a huge advantage towards winning the overall title, something Spieth did just two years ago.

Spieth was 1-over through two holes, then ripped off four birdies in the six holes to take the lead. He put together three more birdies in a row between 14 and 16 to take the lead for good. Johnson had four birdies and one bogey to shoot a 67. Four men are tied for third: Matt Kuchar, Jon Rahm, Patrick Reed and Paul Casey.

The other top players in the world aren’t fairing as well as Johnson and Spieth. Rory McIlroy is +1 while Hideki Matsuyama missed the cut entirely.

UK’s Horsey Takes 2-Stroke Lead in Denmark

Here’s the trick at the Made in Denmark tournament. Shoot a 64, take the lead.

David Horsey shot a 64 on Saturday to take a 2-stroke lead into the final round on Sunday. He’s at 14-under, two strokes ahead of American Julian Suri.

“I really like this golf course, something about it suits my eye so I come in here with good vibes again and the atmosphere coming up 16 is something else, it must be like walking out in a football stadium with 70,000 people cheering for you. I actually said to my caddie, I think I was more nervous on that putt on 16 than I was to win the tournament two years ago,” Horsey said. “Leading by two so I’ll just focus on myself and go out and play the same sort of golf as I have today. It would be nice to add another Made In Denmark trophy to the cabinet so we’ll see what we can do.”

The real story of the day is who’s tied for third, three strokes off the lead.

Yes, it’s American John Daly, who is 3 strokes off the lead at 11-under.  He shot a 65 on Saturday after stroking four birdies on the front nine. He had just one blemish on his card a bogey on No. 16, which he also bogeyed on Friday.

Daly has not won a non-Champions event since 2004. he’s currently 51. His only regular season Euro Tour win was the 2001 BMW International Open. His 65 was his lowest round on the European Tour since 2008 when he fired a 62 at the Hong Kong Open.

Steve Webster Holds 1 Stroke Lead in Denmark

England’s Steve Webster shot a 1-under 70 to take sole possession of the lead at the Made in Denmark Open on Friday.

He’s being tracked by four competitors at 7-under, England’s David Horsey, India’s SSP Chawrasia,  Scotland’s Marc Warren, and Ireland’s Paul Dunne.

The hottest of those four is Warren, who fired a 7-under 64, birdying the first five holes in a row and six of the first seven. He added two birdies on 13 and 14.

Webster’s Day 1 co-leaders did not fare nearly as well as he did. Australia’s Wade Orsmby shot a 1-over 72 to drop two shots off the lead. Britain’s Matt Wallace followed up his 64 with a 3-over 74, with a miserable triple-bogey 8 on No. 4 and a double-bogey 6 on No. 13.

“I have to be honest and say I haven’t been thinking too much about the golf this week,” he said. “My mind has really been thinking about my nan back home because she had a nasty fall at the weekend. Thankfully she is making a recovery and maybe taking my mind away from the golf has been a good thing.

“It was very tough out there today. It was gusting to 30 miles per hour and was mostly a cross-wind off the left which is very difficult to play in. But I played well and was very patient – anything under par today feels like a 65 yesterday so I’m very happy.”

Russell Henley Day 1 Leader at Northern Trust

Russell Henley fired an opening-round 64 to upstage the No. 1 player in the world and take the early lead at the Northern Trust, the opening tournament of the FedEx Cup, on Thursday.

Henley stroked eight birdies, seven of them on putts of 12 feet or fewer. He also put an 80-foot chip in for a birdie.

“I don’t know what the key is, or the secret,” Henley said. “I just tried to hit the fairway, make sure I hit the green when I was in the fairway, and the greens are great and I rolled in a couple of putts.”

Dustin Johnson is a stroke behind Henley with his best start since before the fall that kept hi out of The Masters in April. He is 5-under and had three birdies in his last six holes at Glen Oaks.

“Today was much easier than it has been in the past,” Johnson said. “I’ve been saying it’s close and I’ve seen signs of it. But today was the first day where I felt like all day I was really in control of the swing. Hit a lot of really good shots. Drove it well. Did everything really well. It’s the first time in a long time I’ve done that.”
