Paul Waring Leads HNA Open de France

Paul Waring fired a blistering 7-under to set the early pace at the HNA Open de France on Thursday. He leads the tournament by two strokes through 18 holes.

Ranked 43rd in the current Race to Dubai standings, a win here would be the catalyst to ensure Waring makes the field. He was 4-under on the front nine and 3-under on the back.

“I’m obviously (delighted),” Waring said. “I only hit five fairways which is obscene around here, but I had 10 putts on the back nine. Obviously I rolled the putter great and gave myself some real chances out there and took them.

“If we drive it better, we can go really silly but really happy with how it’s gone. If we can just score similar to that, I’ll be more than happy.”

He made just one bogey on the day.

A promising UK prospect 10 years ago, back injuries have hampered Waring’s career. He missed most of 2011 and 2012, and made just 12 starts in all between 2015 and 2016.

The back is much better this year it seems, as France is his 12th start of the season.

Jordan Spieth Rises to World #3

After sliding as far as sixth in the Official World Golf Rankings, Jordan Spieth is back up to No. 3 in the world today after his playoff victory at the Travelers Championship on Sunday.

Dustin Johnson remains No. 1 for a 12th straight week at 12.6075 average points, chased by Hideki Matsuyama at 8.1427.

Spieth, No. 4 Rory McIlroy, No. 5 Jason Day, and No. 6 Sergio Garcia are all tightly bunched together. Spieth is at 7.74378, McIlroy at 7.7166, Day at 7.2783, and Garcia at 7.1906.

McIlroy, Day, and Garcia each moved down a position in accordance of Spieth’s rise. There were no other moves in the Top 10.

Daniel Berger, who lost the playoff to Spieth, entered the Top 20 for the first time in his career, rising 10 spots to No. 18. Berger is up 16 spots from No. 34 at the end of 2016. Third-place finisher Charley Hoffman jumped nine spots to No. 40. He started the year ranked 66th.

The feel-good story of the European Tour this year was Andres Romero’s win at the BMW International Open on Sunday, his first title in 10 years. He jumped from No. 837 to No. 182 with the victory.

FedEx Cup Standings

Jordan Spieth jumped back into the top five in the most recent FedEx Cup standings following his win at Travelers.

Spieth is No. 4 in the chase behind #1 Dustin Johnson, #2 Hideki Matsuyama, and #3 Justin Thomas. Just 291 points separate the top four players.

Race to Dubai Rankings

Sergio Garcia extend his lead to 221,000 points over Tommy Fleetwood in the Race to Dubai standings after finishing second at the BMW International Open on Sunday.

Garcia has 2.7 million points, Fleetwood 2.48 million. No other player has more than 2 million and only five others – Jon Rahm, Alex Noren, Justin Rose, Bernd Wiesberger, and Ross Fisher – have more than 1 million.

Jordan Spieth Holes Out to Win Travelers

The legend of Jordan Spieth grows and grows.

Spieth joined Tiger Woods as the only players to win 10 PGA tournaments before his 24th birthday, doing so in dazzling fashion to win the Travelers Championship in a sudden-death playoff.

After a tee shot into the bunker in his first playoff hole against Daniel Berger, Spieth holed out from 60 feet, tossing his club and rushing to chest jump his caddie.

Berger caught Spieth by birdying three of his last six holes. After Spieth settled down, Berger narrowly missed a 50-foot putt of his own that would have forced a second playoff hole. Spieth has racked up 10 wins since July of 2013, the last nine since March of 2015, a span of just 27 months.

Spieth takes home 500 FedEx Cup points and $1.224 million.  Charley Hoffman and Danny Lee finished tied for third at 10-under. Hoffman charged up the leaderboard with a 66 but could’t catch the leaders.

Andres Romero Claims First Title in 10 Years

Argentina’s Andres Romero fired a closing-round 65 to finish at 17-under, clinching the BMW International Open on Sunday, his first European Tour win in 10 years.

It was a staggering turn of events for the man who has not made a regular Euro Tour appearance since the 2012 BMW Masters. His last top 10 finish was the BMW PGA Championship in 2008.

“I’m really happy, after ten years winning on the European Tour, especially here in Germany. I’m really, really happy,” he said.

“The whole round was very good. I was focused all day. I didn’t make any bogeys, that is a rare thing for my type of game. The last few holes I noticed I made seven birdies but the whole round was excellent. I was nervous when I got to the 18th green but finally when I was thinking with two putts I could win the tournament, I was really nervous. But hopefully I was going to do a two-putt and now I have my trophy and enjoy this moment.”

Sergio Garcia was one of three men to finish a stroke back at 16-under along with Thomas Detry and Richard Bland.

Romero was ranked 837th in the world entering the tournament. He picked up seven shots on his final 10 holes.

Garcia, Stenson in Hunt at BMW International Open

European Tour megastars Segio Garcia and Henrik Stenson are in the hunt at the BMW International Open through two rounds.

Stenson’s fellow Swede Joakim Lagergren and France’s Joel Stalter lead the tournament at 9-under, with Garcia, Stenson, and four others tied for third at 8-under.

It’s Garcia’s first European Tour event since winning The Masters in April. Stenson is the defending champion here.

“I’m not on top of my game by any means but I think it was a good kind of professional fighting display,” Stenson told the European Tour’s official website.

“We kept it pretty tidy, anyway, and made a couple of birdies when we had the chances and didn’t drop too many. You don’t have to be ashamed of three under I guess around here.”

Lagergren jumped into first by shooting a Day 2 66 on Friday, finishing his day with three straight birdies.  After shooting a 67 on Thursday, Stalter struggled with two bogeys in his first five holes before turning it around and shooting a 68.

Garcia fired a bogey-free round on Thursday to finish with a 6-under 66. He looked primed to take the lead Friday, hitting three straight birdies between holes 6 and 8, but gave two strokes back with bogeys on the back nine.

Stenson has made just one bogey in each of the first two rounds to go 67-69.

Jordan Spieth Leads Travelers Through 36 Holes

He didn’t do what he wanted at the US Open, so Jordan Spieth is taking it out on the course at the Travelers Championship.

Spieth followed up his Thursday 63 with a 1-under 69 on Friday to reach 8-under, taking a 1-stroke lead over Troy Merritt and Patrick Reed.

“We’ve been kind of far behind in a lot of the events in making comeback runs,” said Spieth. “But being able to be toward the front of the pack on a Saturday afternoon is a beautiful position to be in and one that we’ll certainly embrace. I’m going to try to have a lot of fun this weekend.”

Reed fired a 66 and Merritt a 68 to close the gap on Spieth as windy conditions prevailed throughout the day. Spieth was 2-under through 12 before running into trouble and double-bogeying No. 13.  He managed to get back under par with a birdie on No. 15.

Merritt was at even par through 16 then birdied 17 and 18. Reed was 3-under on the  front nine.

How to deal with bike helmet hair if you have long locks

Helmet hair is the worst.

This guide isn’t going to promise that you’ll look like a L’Oreal advert after a long ride (here comes the science: perfect hair isn’t going to happen after a cycle, ever). But it will give you some handy tips and tricks to help keep things in control for a day at the office or some fun at after-work drinks.

So what can we do to at least minimise the knots, the sweat, the lank locks, the kinks, the fly away fringe? How do we inject a little blow-dry va va voom after the morning commute deflates everything our follicles have to offer?

Here are our suggestions.

Plait it up

Braids make rubbish hair look super nice, always. You only need to look at GoT’s silver-headed Daenerys Targaryen to confirm this. Braids also minimise knots and those flyaway hairs that can interfere with your vision during cycling.

There are so many ways to braid your hair; low and loose, high and tight and split into bunches are quick and easy to do on those days when you just really CBA. You can take things up a level by spending a bit more time on a French plait. Not sure how to do it? Check out YouTube for helpful tutorials or get a nice housemate to fix you up before setting off. Any hairs that loosen during your ride will only add to the nonchalant, tousled look. Just be prepared to get mistaken for Blake Lively.

Emergency kit

Keep an emergency hair kit in your locker at work, you won’t regret it.

Dry shampoo is one of the best beauty inventions well, ever. The sweet smell of Batiste Dry Shampoo Coconut takes me back to the glory days of those first festivals and travelling on a shoestring budget. Today it is the smell of sweet hairstyle success. Spray your roots from 30cm away and watch the dry shampoo magically banish all grease like Cillit Bang.

dry shampoo

The Tangle Teezer is another nifty invention worthy of a place in your kit. It does exactly what it says on the tin: teases out those tangles, no matter how hot and sweaty things got under the helmet. It’s small, light and comes in all sorts of colours and designs – including a Star Wars themed one.

Tangle Teezer

Beach sea salt spray is a saviour on those lazy days when you really have no time to iron out any kinks. Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray is a classic choice for ‘I woke up like this’ waves and curls.

Bumble and Bumble

You know those mini toiletries bottles that line the queuing area at the Boots checkout? Get stuck in and pull out your favourite shampoo and conditioner for the work showers. Just make sure that the changing room hairdryer is working, otherwise you’ll be bent underneath the hand dryer for an uncomfortable amount of time.

Lastly, stock up on as many Kirby grips that you can. These little life savers are the saviours of a bad hair day. You know what it’s like though: you buy a pack, use a few then they suddenly all disappear and you find the occasional one lurking under household objects over the next few years. Keep them safe in your kit, where you can keep an eye on them.

Fringe fear

It’s frightening how a fringe can so easily take you from hero to zero in one 30-minute-long bike ride on a warm day. It does this in one of two ways: sticks to your head with sweaty head glue or flicks out in every direction. Both are equally infuriating.

You’re going to need a hair dryer for this one. A toilet hand dryer will do if you’re out and about (swallow your dignity and think of the results). Use a barrel bush to re-dry the hair into position properly. If you’re suffering with flicky-out bits, dampen the hair a teeny-tiny bit and get to work on it again. Keep rollin’ rolling’ rolling’ that brush around. Be sure to pack some kirby grips in case it’s really misbehaving.

Finish off with a quick spritz of hair spray to keep it in place. Do you look like Farrah Fawcett? Great, now go get ‘em tiger!

Farrah's fringe

Quick tips and tricks

  • Keep your helmet clean. The lining can get pretty smelly and dirty, so regularly remove and wash it if possible. I currently have a Bern helmet but might experiment with a more ventilated model to see if it helps with my overheated head.
  • Some people find it helpful to wrap hair in a natural material scarf to help keep it shiny and flat. It acts as a barrier between your hair and the helmet, reducing any friction that causes kinks and frizz.
  • KIRBY GRIPS KIRBY GRIPS KIRBY GRIPS.
  • Own it! Waltz into the office, or up to your after-work date, with helmet in hand. Shake your wild locks, say hello then get on with bossing the rest of your day.

This guide is written from the perspective of a gal with straight, fine, long hair. It would be great to get some more tips from people with different types of hair. Got any advice on how to boost your curls? Does shorter hair still suffer under the helmet? Share your experience and ideas and let us know how you tame those tresses.

Italian Chicken Sheet Pan Supper by Ree

Don’t tell anyone, but I do actually have a handful of recipes in my upcoming cookbook that I can absolutely say are my favorites. Of course, I love every recipe in the book else they would have been rejected, terminated, fired, and nixed long ago. But there are just a few that I love a teeeeeny bit more than the others, much like I always loved Charlie a teeeeeny bit more than the other dogs. I can’t believe I just said that out loud. But I’m getting up there in years, and more and more I’m finding that I have things I need to say and by golly, I’m going to say them!

(I can hear you, along with my parents, saying “Um…I don’t think you’ve had any problem expressing yourself up until this point.” You think I don’t hear you but I do.)

(Also, please don’t be mad at me for saying that I loved one of my dogs above the others. At least I wasn’t talking about my children! And if you’d ever met Charlie, you would understand. I miss the malodorous ol’ fella.)

(Never mind! Forget I said anything! I’m already regretting expressing myself.)

Anyway, this blessedly easy sheet pan meal is way up there on the list for me. Sometimes I forget there’s chicken involved and I eat all the veggies! I love them.

First, make a super fast marinade: Mix some awl (oil) and balSAMic (balsamic) in a bowl…

With some garlic (I’m obsessed with the bags of peeled cloves you can buy in the store)…

And some seasoning. I did a mix of dried parsley, oregano, and basil. Or anything you want! And of course, salt and peppah.

Whisk it all together until it’s totally mixed.

Put some chicken breasts into a ziploc and pour in half the marinade…

Then seal the bag and smush them around to cover the chicken.

Then slice the tomatoes in half lengthwise…

Trim the ends off of a bunch of fresh green beans…

Throw them both into a separate ziploc…

And pour in the rest of the marinade. Let both bags sit while you preheat the oven to 425 degrees!

Pour the contents of both bags onto a sheet pan, discarding any excess marinade.

Then pop it into the oven, and roast it…

Until the chicken is cooked and the veggies are nice and brown! Shake the pan a couple of times while it’s cooking to keep things from sticking/burning.

Look at the beauty!

Sprinkle the chicken with a little parsley, then serve it with a loaf of crusty bread, mashed potatoes, rice, noodles…anything!

Here’s the handy dandy printable.
