Southgate City – Burnaby

Back in 2011, developer Ledingham McAllister bought the old Safeway distribution centre and dairy plant with an ambitious vision in mind. It isn’t often that a fully masterplanned development like Southgate City comes to a major city like Burnaby. This new condo development will become an integral part of the skyline in South Burnaby. As envisioned, Southgate City will include up to 20 condo towers of between 24 and 46 storeys in height, and a variety of low- and mid-rise buildings, all of which combined will consist of about 6,400 residential housing units that will support a population of 20,000 people. The pedestrian- and public-transit oriented development is planned around a five-acre central park that will serve as the Southgate City’s core feature.

The 60-acre development also includes numerous smaller parks, creek-side greenways and open areas, all of which are designed to help foster interconnection between all of its residential and commercial elements. This planned interconnectedness also includes easy access to the rest of Burnaby, and greater Vancouver, via road upgrade connections, pedestrian/bicycling paths, and its proximity to the Edmonds Skyway Station. Proposed commercial ventures include a gourmet grocer, cafés, community shops and restaurants. A new community centre is also included in the plans. The final result will be a stunning community developed from the ground up.

Southgate City will rapidly become one of the most exciting places to live in all of the lower mainland.

With the first building, Precedence, starting sales soon; home buyers will have the opportunity to secure their view of what will become the definition of master planning. Residents will be able to wake up and look out to the green space, fountains, and inviting public spaces. Driving to the hottest restaurants and shops will be a thing of the past with the best that Burnaby has to offer just steps away.

What sets Southgate City apart from other developments is the attention to detail put into every aspect of the design. There are plenty of new condo developments to see in Burnaby and surrounding areas but few, if any, offer the total and complete lifestyle that Southgate City will offer. A new community centre is just one part of the plan that aims to provide residents with a superior living experience in the heart of South Burnaby.

This will undoubtedly be one of the most exciting, inspirational, and popular new condo developments in Burnaby and the entire lower mainland. Stay tuned for more news and developments about Southgate City as construction moves ahead.

To be kept up to date with Southgate city, Register with us today.

Best cycling events in London in February

I always find the time after the Christmas break until March or April when the flowers start coming out as a strange kind of limbo. No one really knows what to do with themselves. Some don’t drink, some remove meat from their diets, some just hunker down and get through. What we miss, really are two (maybe three) months of events and activities that we simply ignore because its chilly and dark outside. By zeroing in on the impending sunshine, we miss the energy that this cold snap brings. So I urge you all to take some inspiration from the fantastic events and activities below – whether it’s going to one of them or making a stance against inactivity and hopping on your bike to enjoy the cold calm, winter makes us feel alive – enjoy every day of it!

The Secret Nuclear Bunker ride

18th of February

The Kelvedon Hatch Nuclear Bunker was built in 1952 and designed for up to 600 military and civilian personnel, possibly even the Prime Minister, their collective task being to organise the survival of the population in the awful aftermath of a nuclear war. Led by the Newham cyclists – the ride up to the bunker is equally impressive and is a good chance to get out of the day-to-day and explore something different. The ride will go through Essex Lanes to the ‘Secret’ Nuclear Bunker.  Its about a medium difficulty so it should be a good way to get off the sofa. The group will Meet at Leytonstone station cafe, (east side) at 9:30, bring Oyster cards. They will take the train to Epping, then ride via Toot Hill and Navestock to Kelvedon Hatch and the secret bunker.  There’s more information about the day on the Newham Cyclists page.

Ssh, it’s a Quietway!

10th of February

Quietway’s are one of my favourite (maybe the favourite) part about riding in London. They’re safe, quiet (obviously), but most importantly they let you really enjoy your surroundings. You can cycle at your own leisurely pace and enjoy the company of a friend or two – which doesn’t exactly happy on the daily commute to work.

Shh, it’s a Quietway! is an event that will see cyclists bike the 16km length of Quietway 2 from Central London to Walthamstow. Its scheduled to start at 1:30pm on the 10th February and you can really take as long as you want although its estimated finish time will be around 5pm (so bring some lights and warm clothing). Quietway 2 is one of my favourite cycling routes in London because you go from beautiful central London with all the historical buildings of Bloombury, through leafy Angel, Canonbury and London Fields, around the Walthamstow and Hackney Marshes which are key wildlife zones for the London area, and then finishing in Walthamstow which is one of my new favourite London ‘towns’ that has a host of great bars, eateries and shops.I’d say this would be a fantastic afternoon out. The group will leave right on the dot at 1:30pm on Bernard Street, right opposite Russel Square station.

The London Cycling Campaign has a listing here with a few more details.

The Kingston Bread Pudding Ride

4th of February

If you’re in South London on the 4th of Feb and feel like a casual afternoon of cycling and food, then the Kingston Bread Pudding Ride is possibly the perfect combination of leisurely exercise and eating that will remove all guilt from the winter feast. It will be an easy-paced ride which will be great because after the pub lunch and the bread pudding I doubt you’ll wanting to be cycling too fast. The group will meet under the Queen Anne statue in Kingston Market Place at 10:30 ready to go and after a ride and a pub lunch, you should be back in Kingston by 4:15.

There’s a few more details on the London Cycling Campaign site.

CLOG Essex Lanes Ride

17th of February

The Central London Outdoor Group is a friendly outdoor activity group for people living in and around London. They organise events from walks around the Thames to steam boat journey and by bike, they’ve explored rivers, canals, forts, castles, coast, marshes, gardens, woods, ruins, churches, mansions… the list goes on.There is literally something for everyone and every interest. A great group to keep in mind if you’re interested in more than just cycling. On the 17th of Feb the group is going for a day out in Essex, by bike – looking to go around 28 miles. They’ll start at the historic village of Ingatestone with its 11th century church and cycle through the woods towards Highwood and then to the pretty village of Blackmore where morning tea and cakes is the first item on the agenda. With more villages and lunch on the to do list it will be a full day – but one well worth it! You’ll need to jump on the 10:25 train from Stratford and then its just a 20minute journey until you’re at Ingatestone.

More details can be found here on the London Cycling Campaign site

Windy, rainy, snowy, and cold – all things associated with winter. That’s why we made gloves, raincoats, boots and thermals – so you can get out of your everyday and go an enjoy this beautiful season!

Li Leads McIlroy by 1 at Omega Classic

Haotong Li has a 1-stroke lead over Rory McIlroy headed to the final round of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.

Despite being pursued by one of the most prolific players of the last two decades, Li seems to be playing with no fear. He shot a 64 on Saturday to reach 20-under, leaving him two shy of the tournament record of 22-under fired by Thomas Bjorn in 2001.

“I’ve never been in this position before so it’s going to be fun out there tomorrow,” said Li. “Hopefully I can do my best out there and have some low scores. I just want to play by myself and play my game. I thought if I just stayed patient, I’ll play good. So I just stayed patient all day.”McIlroy was rough around the edges on the front nine but fired a back-nine 32 to stay within a stroke and put himself in position to win this event for the third time in his career.

Palmer Leads Farmers; Tiger Woods Makes Cut

Tiger Woods has never been happier being tied for 65th at a golf tournament.

The 14-time Major winner  birdied  his final hole to make the cut with a 1-under 71 at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. The final birdie was a two-putt from 90 feet away.

He’s 10 strokes behind leader Ryan Palmer. Palmer was 5-under for the day and is 11-under for the tournament.

Palmer finished his round with an eagle and a birdie to finish with a 5-under 67. He is ahead of defending champion Jon Rahm, the #2 player int he world, by one stroke.

Not surprisingly, the near-mythical Woods had the biggest following, which got plenty loud when his final birdie got him to Saturday.

“It was a grind. I fought hard,” Woods said. “Typical. Just me going out there and fighting for whatever I can get. It’s all good.”

The last time Woods made the cut on a PGA event was the 2015 Wyndham Championship, which was also the last time he finished in the top 10.

Meanwhile Rahm, coming off a California victory last week, is surging with some of the best golf of his career.

“I was able to get up-and-down for par, and not making mistakes and taking advantage of the birdie putts,” he said. “I probably shot the lowest I could shoot today.”

Tony Finau Leads Farmers; Tiger Woods Shoots 72

Tony Finau shot the quietest 7-under in human history on Thursday, doing so at the same tournament that saw Tiger Woods play his first tournament on US soil in more than a year.

Finau had nine birdie to counter a pair of bogeys to shoot a 65, putting him one stroke ahead of Ted Potter Jr. and Ryan Palmer.

Wood was 2-over through the first five holes before birdying #6 and #10 to get even. He bogeyed 13 before birdying 16. He’s tied for 72nd with the likes of Hideki Matsuyama and Rickie Fowler.

“It was fun; fun to be able to compete again,” Woods said. “It was to be out there. … I was probably a little bit rusty. I’ve got to hit my irons a little bit better than I did today,” he said. “I didn’t hit them very close. I didn’t give myself a lot of looks, and then it’s hard to make a lot of birdies when you’re not giving yourself any looks. I didn’t do that today. So tomorrow hopefully I drive it a little bit better, hit my irons a lot closer, and we’ve got the better of two greens tomorrow so we’ll see what happens.”

Patrick Reed, who is tied for 14th, played in Woods’ group along with Charley Hoffman. Reed, who was mentored by Woods at the Ryder Cup last year, was impressed with the 14-time Major winner’s performance.

“There were some things out there that were pretty cool to see,” said Reed.  “He hit a high, tight draw driver. He hit that low cut that went miles. Some of those cuts he hit off the tee today were insanely long. You’re thinking a cut isn’t supposed to go that far. He’s hitting a flat cut out there 30 yards past your driver and you’re like, all right. …”

Woods has won the tournament at Torrey Pines six times in his career.

Jamie Donaldson Fires 62 at Desert Classic

In search of his first European Tour title in nearly four years, Jamie Donaldson fired an opening-round 62 to lead the Dubai Desert Classic by two strokes.

The 42-year-old has suffered through a malady of injuries over the past several years.

“I had tennis elbow for a year and a half, that wasn’t very nice, but you’ve just got to try and play through these things.,” Donaldson said. “I took three months off at the end of 2016 trying to get myself right and it didn’t work. Now it’s gone, I feel fully fit. I’ve been working on my game, trying to find the form that I’ve found in the past. Everything worked perfectly today.”

Earlier this decade, Donaldson was one of the more well-known names on the European Tour as he won three tournaments in 25 months, including the 2013 Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. He also finished tied for seventh at the 2012 PGA Championship about a month after grabbing his first career win at The Irish Open.

Starting on the back nine Thursday, Donaldson race through the course with birdies on 10, 12, 17 and 18 and an eagle on the par-5 13th.

He nearly aced No. 7, which would have seen him sharing the course record set by Ernie Els in 1994. He was also pushing for a 59.

I’m not going to lie to you, I was thinking about it,” he said. “I birdied five and then started thinking, ‘if i just birdie them all coming in, then I’ve done it. Sometimes you’re best not thinking and just keep playing but I was picturing birdying them all and then jumping in the lake on the last. I’m stood here at 10-under which I’m very happy with.”

Tyrrell Hatton is second at 8-under, with Rory McIlroy among a group five men tied for third at 7-under. McIlory had a bogey-free round.

Spreads Video! by The Pioneer Woman

My brother used to call these “Spreads” because you SPREAD the dough out before it bakes, and then you SPREAD chocolate all over the top. I posted it years and years ago here on the blog, and back then I used margarine!

No, I did not post it in 1978. It’s just what my mom used to use when she made Spreads!

The updated printable recipe is over to the right. These are fun and tasty! Hope you enjoy the video (and the sound effects!) As always, let me know what else you’d like to see in future videos!
