Karlsson Takes 1-Stroke Lead to Sunday at British Masters

On a day that saw scores go all over the place, Sweden’s Robert Karlsson eked out a 3-under 67 to reach 12-under for the tournament taking a 1-stroke lead at the British Masters.

Karlsson was 1-over through eight holes before he eagled the par-4, 422-yard No. 9. He dominated the back nine for a third straight day, shooting 2-under with a pair of birdies. Through three days, he’s 7-under on the back nine.

Five players – three Brits, a Scott and an Irishman – are all one stroke back. Among them is Ian Poulter, who shot a 2-under 68. The big movers in that quintet were Paul Dunne and Richie Ramsay, who each shot a 5-under 65.

Four more players are 10-under, including a resurgent Rory McIlroy, who shot a 6-under 64, and David Lingmerth, who fired a tournament-low 62.

McIlroy was 4-under though two rounds, but played a bogey-free round on Saturday with four birdies on the front nine.

Lingmerth climbed 46 spots up the leaderboard thanks to his 62. He shot five straight birdies between No. 4 and No. 8, and would have challenged for a 59 had it not been for his bogey on No. 15.

US Team Running Away with President’s Cup

The United States has opened an 8-2 lead on the International Team though two days at the Presidents Cup.

The Americans went 4-0-1 to rack up 4.5 points to just 0.5 for the International squad. The US was up 3.5-1.5 after the first day of competition.

On Thursday, two of the US wins were as close to blowouts as you get in international golf.  Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler defeated Charl Schwartzel and Hideki Matsuyama 6&4 while Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed knocked off Emiliano Gillo and Si Woo Ki 5&4.

The Presidents Cup is similar to the Ryder Cup although with a shorter history.  The International team is comprised of anyone not from the US or Europe, meaning a bulk of the players are from South Africa, Australia, Asia, or South America.

Matt Kuchar and Dustin Johnson defeated Jhonattan Vegas and Adam Scott 1 up while Phil Mickelson and Kevin Kisner split a point with Marc Leishman and Jason Day. The lone International win on Thursday came when Branden Grace and Louis Oosthuizen defeated Daniel Berger and Brooks Koepka 3&1.

The competition was closer on Friday but the US still won four out of five points and halved the fifth. Mickelson, despite being a late add to the team helped Kisner defeat Leishman and Day 1 up.

Charley Hoffman and Kevin Chappell ahd the easiest time, defeating Anriban Lahiri and Charl Schwartzel 6&5.

Thomas and Fowler defeated Grace and Oosthuizen 3&2, and Koepka and Johnson did likewise to Vegas and Adam Scott.

The surprise result was Adam Hadwin and Hideki Matsuyama halving a point with Reed and Spieth.

While comebacks happen all the time in this format, the US now needs just 7.5 points to take the title while the International team needs 13.5 points.

Since is inception in 1994, the US has dominated the Presidents Cup, with a 9-1-1 record. The International team’s lone win came in 1998, with a 17-17 tie in 2003.

Coetzee, Hatton Early Leaders at British Masters

South Africa’s George Coetzee and native son Tyrrell Hatton are tied for the lead at the British Masters after the opening round on Thursday. Both men shot 7-under 63s.

Coetzee exploded out of the gate with two birdies and an eagle 3 on the par-5, 454-yard No. 6 to hit the turn at 4-under. He added three birdies and one bogey on the back nine.

Hatton was 2-under through 11 holes, then rattled off five birdies i his last seven holes to tie for the lead.

Five players are tied for second, one stroke back at 6-under. All five are currently outside the top 60 in the Race to Dubai standings, so a victory here would be enormous. Among them is Brit Chris Hanson, who recorded five birdies in his first seven holes.

Sweden’s Alex Noren, the 2016 champion, struggled to a 1-over 71 on Thursday. He was 2-under through eight holes before bogeying 9 and 12 to drop to even par. He birdied 13 but suffered a double-bogey 6 on No. 16.

Much closer to the top of the leaderboard is 2015 British Masters champion Matthew Fitzpatrick. He shot a 4-under 66 with only one blemish – a bogey on 14 – and is tied for 13th with the likes of Graeme McDowell, Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter.

Rory McIlroy is tied for 24th at 3-under, four strokes off the lead. He recorded four birdies and one bogey on the day.  McIlroy has finished in the top 10 six times this year but is still chasing his first win.

Justin Thomas Wins FedEx Cup

He didn’t win the Tour Championship – losing by one stroke to rookie Xander Schauffele – but there’s no doubting Justin Thomas was the best golfer on the PGA Tour in 2017.

Finishing second two weeks after winning the second leg of the FedEx Cup assured him the overall title. In the reset points Thomas finished with 3,000, 640 ahead of Jordan Spieth.

Schauffele finished third with 2,151 followed by Dustin Johnson (1,720) and Jon Rahm (1,620).

It caps an absolutely brilliant year for Thomas that saw him clear almost $20 million prize money while winning five times and finishing in the top 10 12 times.

Thomas made his name early in the 2016-2017 season with four top 10 finishes, including three wins, in his first six tournaments.

He won the CIMB Classic with a record 23-under; the SBS Tournament of Champions at 22-under, and the Sony Open in Hawaii at 27-under, shooting 59 on the first day.

He didn’t drop off in the New Year as many are perchance to do when they have fast Octobers and Novembers. Thomas finished tied for fifth at WGC-Mexico City and again at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. He was tied for fourth at the Memorial and tied for ninth at the US Open.

He stepped into the public eye en masse by winning the PGA Championship last month, then won the Dell Technologies Championship three weeks ago to secure his spot in the top five of the final FedEx standings.

He shot 67-66-70-66 at Atlanta missing the outright win by one stroke.

He won $10 million for the FedEx cup title and accumulated $9.920 million in regular winnings this season.

Rookie Xander Schauffele Wins TOUR Championship Tournament

With a name like Xander Schauffele, you’re bound to stand out on the PGA Tour just because. On Sunday in Atlanta, the 23-year-old rookie stood out among the best golfers in the world.

The native of San Diego won the TOUR Championship by one stroke over FedEx Cup winner Justin Thomas, sliding in a 3-foot birdie to finish a 2-under 68 in the final round.

“Five months ago, two months ago, three hours ago, I wasn’t expecting a lot,” Schauffele said. “I’ve hit every goal we’ve ever imagined.”

All this a year after missing a PGA tour card by $975, only to earn it during a four-tournament playoff series.

As late as June he was 134th in the FedEx Cup standings and had to qualify for the US Open by way of a five-man playoff for the final two spots.

Thomas couldn’t make up enough ground because Schauffele gave him no room to on the back nine, one-putting four straight greens from outside of six feet. With the last birdie, he won $3.75 million. He’s suddenly No. 32 in the world.

A month shy of his 24th birthday, Schauffele finishes the 2017 season making 20 cuts in 28 events, winning two tournaments, finishing in the top 10 four time and the top 25 11 times. He earned $4.312 million for the season.

London in the spotlight for an urban cycling lifestyle documentary

This week, I went along to a Cycle Speed Dating event at Look Mum No Hands!, with a roped-in supportive friend and my Dutch bicycle Millie in tow. Cyclists looking for love in Lycra came together at Lmnh Kitchen, to follow the usual speed dating format of spending a few minutes chatting with each potential date in the room.

What makes the night unique is that everyone has at least one passion in common – cycling! It’s a great conversation starter that helps minimise those inevitable awkward silences and boring ‘so what do you do?’ questions. It’s for this reason that Berlin based Kobalt Productions chose to film the event for a documentary to be shown on French and German culture channel, Arte.

Filming for documentary

London’s growing social cycling scene is getting noticed

The team are focusing on exploring the growing passion for urban cycling in European cities. Janin Renner, who contacted me about the documentary, said: ‘We’re visiting bike lovers in Berlin, Copenhagen and London, to film for our documentary on the urban cycling lifestyle. We will also be producing two other documentaries as part of the series – one looking at bicycles in art and pop culture, and a third one about using bicycles and cycling as a political weapon.’

Asked what her team have found in their own research of the urban cycling culture in London, Janin told me: ‘We were astonished to see that there are so many cycle cafes and cool places that cyclists can go to, and that you have events like the cycle speed dating. We notice that cycling in London is getting more and more popular, and almost seems like a very fashionable thing to do right now.’

A unique event for London cyclists

Because speed-dating isn’t nerve-racking enough, I also agreed to be filmed and interviewed at the event for the documentary. Mellowed by the free glass of wine that all guests get on arrival, I had a fun evening of meeting and talking to a variety of people. And it wasn’t just the conversations with potential dates, either. It was lovely to meet other likeminded women who all had something fascinating to chat about that went beyond boys and bikes (and of course we compared the notes that we had been making all night!).

During the interviews before and after the speed dating, I discussed the growing number of social spaces and events for cyclists in London.  The number of emerging and thriving cycling cafes are testament to how cycling is continuing to become a bigger part of London’s social scene, bringing cyclists and non-cyclists together over coffee, cake and cocktails.

What other events can you get involved in?

For the documentary on ‘cycling as a political weapon’ the team are following an alley cat race and the messenger scene in London – fascinating subjects, which are perhaps niche pastimes for most! So what other social events are there for urban cyclists of all levels to get involved with? You can keep track of the city’s cycle cafes and cycling clubs with our London Cyclist guides. Here are a few picks of what’s coming up soon:

Dino Golf Ride with Cycle PS (10 mile ride, dino themed mini golf and 10 mile ride back) – Sunday 15th October, 10 am, £7 each

Yoga for cyclists at London Velo – Mondays, 7:15 pm, £12 per session

Beers with Brothers Cycles bike launch at Soho Bikes – Thursday 6th October, 7pm, no entry fee

An evening with Adventure Syndicate and the Long-Distance Ladies at Look Mum No Hands – Tuesday October 10th 6:30 pm, £7 suggested donation

Cycle Speed Dating at Lmnh Kitchen (with bike ride) – Sunday 15th October, 12 pm

If you’re one of the LC readers who attended the event on Tuesday, the documentary will air on Arte TV in March 2018. You might even end up watching it with a match you made on the night.

Best bike cameras for on and off road cycling – 2017 edition

Whether you want a camera for safety, for video making, or to just have fun with – there’s plenty out there to choose from. We’ve hand picked a few that we recommend and added in some notes about what mounts you’ll need to make these cameras bike friendly.

GoPro Hero5

GoPro has always been the leader in portable cameras and their latest Hero5 camera is no exception. The Hero costs £380 on Amazon, but it’s unlikely you’ll find a better camera. It features a 12 megapixel sensor capable of capturing 4K at 30fps, 1080p at 120fps and 720p at up to 240fps.

It’s incredibly simple to use and they’ve added a rear touchscreen, voice control, and GPS – they’ve packed a lot in such a small space. They’ve also added the QuikStories feature, which automatically transfers and edits footage for you. Like with any GoPro – attach it to your helmet, backpack, or handle bars for any kind of footage and you’ll come out with top-of-the-market quality shots.

You can strap the GoPro on to a rucksack, but you’ll most likely want to add a bike mount to your spending spree. The official GoPro Handlebar, Seatpost and Pole Mount costs around £25 from Amazon.

GoPro Hero Session5

Hero4 Session

On the more affordable end of the spectrum, but still offering up to 4k video is the GoPro Hero session. This comes in a compact size, with largely the same set of features as the GoPro Hero5. Of course, you don’t get the touch screen, but the camera can be controlled through your phone. Otherwise, just tap the record button and start your cycle. The GoPro Hero Session5 can be purchased for £129.00 from Amazon. The same official bike mount we mentioned above, also works with the Hero Session5.

Cycliq Fly Cameras

fly12 cycliq cycling camera

The Cycliq Fly 6 rear bike camera and the Fly 12 front camera provide both a bike light and a camera. That’s handy for those of who are not fans of clutter on our bike handlebars.

Fly 12 bike camera

Staring with the Fly 12 – you get 1080p at 45 fps. The camera is built with cyclists in mind. The wide angle lens means you can capture license plates in a 135 degree arc of footage. The camera battery has a massive 10 hour life but by far the most impressive part of the Fly 12 is its bike alarm. Whenever the unit is moved too much the light will begin to flash and the camera will record. The app will also alert you when the alarm is set off providing a useful security feature.

The Fly12 bike light offers 400 lumens of LED light, making it perfect not just for being seen but also for late night dark commutes. You can mount the Fly12 above or below the handlebar, thanks to the cone-shaped beam. The light can be configured through an accompanying app, allowing you to choose different light modes.

The Fly12 can record with a looping video meaning you’ll never run out of memory space in the included SD card. As the card runs out of memory it’ll wipe the older footage. If you did have an accident, the camera will sense this and preserve that footage.

With two buttons on the back – you can turn the unit on and off, cycle through various light modes and tap to transfer data over wifi to the Cycliq app on your phone.

For Strava lovers, you can even overlay Strava metrics on your video.

The Fly 12 will set you back around £200 but for that you get a complete package, with no need to buy any additional mounts. The Fly12 is by far one of the most feature rich and impressive cameras we’ve seen for an urban cyclist.

Fly 6 bike camera

We put together a very thorough review of the Fly 6 back in 2014. The Fly 6 costs £119 and comes with 6 hours of battery life for the camera.

Vermont Action Camera

Now we go to the other end of the price spectrum. Action cameras are incredibly expensive so we want to include an option that was reasonable for everyone. For £19.99 the Vermont Action camera is the cheap option allowing anyone to grab a cam and go. Its great, compact, easy to use and captures HD footage at 1080p at up to 30fps. It only has around a 90 minutes of recording time, so expect to have to charge it regularly.

There isn’t a lot of information about the brand and they only exist on Amazon, but they offer a 1-year warranty so if anything does go wrong then you can get it replaced or your money back. Its not going to win any video quality awards, but it does the trick. For the price you also get a helmet and bike mount.

RoadHawk Ride R+ Cycle Edition

RoadHawk is a British brand that for over ten years has only been making high-quality cameras for motorists and cyclists. We really like this camera for its size and sleekness. Unlike all the other cameras, it’s not bulging out too much. If you’re the cyclist who doesn’t like too many ‘things’ popping off your handlebars or helmet then take a look. For £136 on Amazon you get 1080p at 30fps, 720p at 60 fps, waterproof for raining cycling, and video is time and date stamped. The camera comes with three mounts – one of your handlebars, a tray mount and a flat tray mount.

TomTom Bandit

The TomTom Bandit is a great high-quality addition to the camera market. Check out some of its video here. The GPS maker has taken its expertise and used it to build in a series of sensors that record location, speed, and G-force – and when the sensors pick up something exciting, they automatically tag the footage. How nifty. The app is handy too – give your phone a shake and the app automatically edits the footage. It’ll set you back around £150 from Amazon and isn’t as aesthetically pleasing as some others, but its great value for money from a trusted brand. In reality, you’ll also need to purchase the bike pack, which means the cost quickly rises to a hefty £270.

You may also be interested in our helmet camera roundup, which features the Garmin Virb, Contour and Polaroid Cube.
